Thrane & Thrane Update

October 27, 2010

I recently had a chance to sit with Ron Lockerby of Thrane & Thrane to learn about what was new with the company’s satellite product line which serves a diverse set of markets such as maritime, aeronautical and land mobile. With a total of 600 people in the company and 60% of those being engineers you can expect engineering to be a strong-suit of the organization.

Thrane & Thrane’s maritime products consist of the SAILOR line which is OEMed by Northrop Grumman’s Sperry Marine unit and the product line consists of VHF, MF/HF, Inmarsat C terminals, complete GMDSS systems including LRIT and SSAS solutions, and a full range of maritime satcom products including Iridium, Mini-M, Fleet, FleetBroadBand, VSAT and satellite TV.

Lockerby spent some time focusing on the company’s Explorer 325 which is a compact voice and broadband solution for vehicles.

BroadSoft BroadCloud a Smart Move

October 25, 2010

Moving from equipment to the cloud is very smart move and something I noticed many vendors at the recent ITEXPO in Los Angeles were focused on doing. Just as VARs and channel partner/MSPs have shifted from once selling hardware to services for the recurring revenue and to offset shrinking margins, I expect many hardware providers to follow suit.

As the trend continues expect prices for services to drop in response to greater supply in the market. Why?

Broadvox Buys Cypress - Advice to Acquirers

October 17, 2010

TMC blogger, Peter Radizeski may have set two records in breaking news of two acquisitions in one day. If that isn't a record, certainly the fact that both acquiring companies start with the same five letters has to make it into the Guinness Book.

First there was Broadsoft acquiring Casabi which I commented on last week. Next there was Broadvox acquiring Cypress Communications which Peter broke here and follwed up on here. TMC's Paula Bernier added her opinions to the mix and further reminds us of a slew of other acquisitions taking place in the market.

My thoughts on the matter are fairly simple and straightforward.

Interactive Intelligence Announces Positive Preliminary Earnings

October 12, 2010

There are a few things I wish for regarding earnings in the tech space.

  • I wish I had time to give my thoughts on every announcement
  • I wish they were all as good as what Interactive Intelligence just accomplished
In short the company just released preliminary third-quarter numbers and said they had nine orders over $1 million with two of them being larger than $2M. I am not sure how this compares with past quarters but regardless, these are significant customer sizes in an era of price compression.

The company says its cloud offering is doing well and you may recall company CMO Joe Staples spent some time recently (video) in the TMC Newsroom giving me details of the launch.

ININ expects total revenue to be between $41-$42 million with GAAP net income between $3.3-$3.9M. Last year the number was $2.8M meaning an increase of at least 17% over last year's sales.

According to founder and CEO Dr. Don Brown, the size of the deals gives the company increased operating leverage and revenue growth.

Here are additional details regarding the company's earnings:

Interactive Intelligence plans to issue a press release announcing its final 2010 third-quarter results Nov. 1 at 4 p.m. Eastern daylight time.

Thought Leaders Descend Upon ITEXPO

October 2, 2010

Kind of a silly term- "thought leader" but in every market there are people involved in setting the conversation... Those whose thoughts and ideas permeate the web and industry conversations. "Did you hear what so and so said? Can you believe he thinks this company sells junk products and won't be around in a year?"

Well you get the idea.

It turns out a number of the people in the market who I have personally followed for some time have joined forces on a blog called Voyces.

ITEXPO West 2010 Show Guide Available

October 1, 2010

The ITEXPO West 2010 Show Guide is here and if you are flying to the show - you may want to download it to your Kindle/laptop/iPad/netbook/smartphone or print it. I am on the plane now and we have the equivalent of a 300 baud modem's worth of bandwidth so I can't download it but as I recall it is over 100 pages and gives you a solid overview of the dozen conferences taking place next week.

In addition it shows you the exhibit hall with over 200 exhibitors and which sections correspond to which technology.

I have this dream that I will have enough time to go through the directory and point to some of the interesting highlights in a blog post.

We'll see how that works out.

Here is the PDF and it is fairly compressed down to 5 Megs as I recall - we may be getting a higher res one soon as well in case you have the bandwidth.
