ITEXPO

Voice Peering Conference at ITEXPO in LA this October

April 26, 2010

Everyone probably knows I have been a huge proponent of the voice/VoIP peering space for the last five years. A few of the first people get me enthused about the space were Shrihari Pandit of Stealth Communications and Hunter Newby who is now at Allied Fiber. Over the years, we at TMC have held numerous educational sessions on peering at ITEXPO and recently we have had calls to increase the coverage of peering at the show.

The reason?

Odin Telesystems Update

April 14, 2010

It has been a while since I met with executives from Odin Telesystems but it all came back to me when I sat down a week ago with company

President & CEO Hanz Johansson to discuss his company's DSP resource solutions which can act as gateways, transcoding devices and PBX building-blocks when coupled with the right software like Asterisk.

I first met the company at a trade show in New York in the mid-nineties and followed up later that year by going to the company's Texas HQ to learn about how they play in the space. At the time, Odin was a relatively new entrant into the US and they were going up against high-flying Dialogic, NMS and Brooktrout - three companies who have been subsequently merged with a bunch more companies added in such as Snowshore, Excel etc.

Nor'easters Remind us why the PSTN is Useful

March 15, 2010

Having been one of the early evangelists of VoIP and launching the first magazine in the space - Internet Telephony and longest-running conference, etc - I think I need to take a moment and point out that one of the challenges of consumer VoIP is the need for external power. This past weekend, the northeast just endured a nor'easter where I saw massive trees buckle like dandelion stalks in the hurricane-force winds. I literally saw massive branches just shy of fully-grown tree trunk circumference shatter like a falling ice cube on concrete. Now, somewhere between 500,000-1,000,000 people are without power in the tri-state area.

Supercomm Dies, What it Means to Carriers, The Industry

February 8, 2010

Last week, Doug Mohney had the big scoop that Supercomm will be cancelled - he blogged it as a rumor which was subsequently confirmed by the TIA and USTelecom today. As a show organizer myself I get a lot of questions regarding what this news means to our industry. Rather than continuing to opine on a person-by-person basis, I thought it made sense to put my thoughts in writing.

Tech, Telecom: The Energy is Back

February 3, 2010

Communications, wireless, consumer electronics, cloud computing, virtualization -- in a turbulent market, it is good to be in technology.

Monster.com was one of the companies I considered to have a natural monopoly in the US job search market a decade ago. Amazingly, social media sites like LinkedIn and Craigslist are making Job sites less relevant and as a result Monster just picked up HotJobs for $225 in cash to shore up its decreasing market share.

A decade or so ago it was common knowledge that satellite radio would eventually make a huge dent in the business of traditional radio companies.

Patent Pooling Taking Off

February 2, 2010

I suggested companies join the RPX patent protection club back in 2008 as I have seen how patent litigation can destroy a company's profitability and force it to lose focus. RPX as you may remember is a firm whose goal is to allow companies to buy into a pool of patents which can be used to protect them against future lawsuits. The idea is a company will think twice about pursuing a patent lawsuit if you can countersue using a huge pool of patents.

Since my original entry, Microsoft, Nokia and Sony have signed up for the service.

Jon Arnold on ITEXPO East 2010

January 28, 2010

Influential analyst Jon Arnold spent some time documenting the ITEXPO event of last week. He has a bunch of photos as well. Hope you find it useful. Here are some excerpts:

Never a dull moment at the ITExpo last week, and as per my earlier post today, here are some highlights of goings-on I caught outside the Smart Grid Summit.
