Caritas/Comcast VoIP Patent Victory

November 14, 2006

The VoIP market won a victory in Texas yesterday with Comcast defending itself successfully against a $2.2 billion lawsuit brought on by Caritas Technologies. The company was formed by four men, including David Farber, who many consider the grandfather Internet, was awarded a series of VoIP-related patents. One, in particular, Caritas claimed could be read to include calls that were made partly using VoIP connections and partly across the PSTN. Essentially, Caritas was claiming to have invented to capability to connect calls running partially on the PSTN and partially on IP networks, explained Daralyn Durie, attorney at Keker & Van Nest, LLP, representing Comcast in the case.   In the suit, whereby Caritas sought to end the Comcast Digital Voice (CDV) VoIP service offering, Caritas alleged that CDV infringed on Caritas’ patent rights, and in a claim construction hearing on July 31, the main issue was the term, “telephone connection in a telephone network.” Comcast held that the patent owned by Caritas was intended as a way to set up conference calls on the PSTN, not a way to have actual voice signals transmitted over an IP network.

Get the Full IP Communications Experience

October 8, 2006

I can't help but feel like a proud parent as we get ready for this week's ITEXPO. The team I work with have absolutely outdone themselves and the scope of this event is beyond my imagination. To think this show started in 1999 at the Hotel Del Coronado a stones throw from the San Diego Convention Center -- it's current home.

As you get ready to come to ITEXPO this week there is one request I would like to make of you and that is this event has more content than any previous event in TMC history and it certainly has as much education as any event I have ever been to. The goal of this blog entry is not to brag but to ensure you are spending enough time in the sessions in the conference rooms and/or on the show floor.

My request is that you plan to have enough time to absorb everything -- the exhibits -- there are more exhibits at this show than ever before -- and all the sessions.

TMC in Stamford Advocate

September 3, 2006

TMC was featured on the front page of the business section of the Stamford Advocate newspaper today. It was also in the Hartford Courant (at least online – I am not sure if it made the printed version on Sunday) The article was great and we are humbled by the nice coverage of TMC. One thing I am glad the piece focused on is how much we value our team and what they have helped build. It has been a wild ride and the last 7 years have been so exciting – from ideal telecom times to rough ones and then massive growth once again.

ITEXPO – Early Bird

August 28, 2006

Time is running out to take advantage of early-bird pricing for Internet Telephony Conference & Expo. A reminder to my blog readers that the time is now to save up to $1,000 on a registration. That, my friends is a whole bunch of iPods, SIP phones, infinity Asterisk servers (assuming you have the hardware ), and since we are heading into back-to-school season – that’ll buy you about two entry-level student-ready laptops.

I am really jazzed about this event because we have some of the best speakers we have ever had at our ITEXPO conferences and the breadth and depth of knowledge you will receive over the course of a few days is almost beyond explanation.

It should be noted that TMC has also partnered with other groups to make our already top-ranked conference program even better.

Remember finally that TMC remains the only conference company in IP communications to guarantee your conference registration.

By the way -- we have yet to have a single person take us up on this guarantee (even after thousands of conferees) and we are proud of this fact.

For your hard-earned conference dollars you should just say NO to Industry Per/Sales-spectives.

Net2Phone Sues Skype/eBay

June 4, 2006

Anyone who has been in this business long enough knows that before Skype ever existed, Net2Phone was selling VoIP service. The company was one of the first to be part of the Internet Telephony shows. I remember being in their offices in the nineties and them telling me that by not advertising that they were using the Internet to transmit calls, sales actually increased. Now it seems the opposite is true -- VoIP is more chic than the PSTN -- even to the average consumer.

Net2Phone is one of the true VoIP pioneers along with VocalTec and Natural Microsystems.

TMCnet breaks One Million Unique Visitors

May 1, 2006

I just landed and checked e-mail and one of the first messages I saw is that TMCnet broke one million filtered unique visitors in the month of April 2006.

I was really hoping April would be the month we reached this goal.

I have to thank you once again for visiting TMCnet and helping us achieve this goal. By the way the official number is 1,053,840.

We have two more goals. One is Alexa of 1,000 -- which would put TMCnet in the top 1,000 sites in the entire world. We are currently ranked 1,387 so we are close.
