How ITEXPO Has Transformed into THE Communications Event

January 19, 2017

Recently, we have had a great deal of feedback from attendees commenting that ITEXPO in Florida (Yes, Florida, in February – and airfares are literally dirt cheap) has evolved to become THE communications event – for the Americas and beyond. We are humbled by the comments but the credit goes to my team who tirelessly looks to improve each event with fresh new content.

An analyst told me once that the show is so full of information that you run around like a chicken with your head cut off, except he said it Yiddish which made it sound more exotic.

I wasn’t sure at the time if it was a compliment but in a way it is the testament that the show has so much important information that you really need a team to cover it all.

The Deskphone Market... it's Alive; it's Alive!

January 19, 2017

The deskphone market has been left for dead by many but there is still room in the space for the device to evolve and become become a more integral part of your UC strategy. The ideas is simple... What if your deskphone became a colleague of your mobile, allowing you to have the advantages of the deskphone and mobile while leveraging the best of each from the other.

It may sound complicated but in reality, the idea is to allow calls to flow in either direction while allowing you to remote into your deskphone from anywhere.

Allworx came by TMC HQ and showed their new phones off to us last week and we remain impressed.

Congrats to TMC Customer Phone.com

January 19, 2017

Hats off to Phone.com for big customer wins in 2016. The cloud communications company landed new partners and clients like StructuredWeb, Liftmaster and The City of Newark.  In addition to an expanding clientele, the product suite augmented with a new and improved API to aid in iOS and Android apps, as well as Web collaboration, video conferencing, call presence and the phone system in general.

Building on the momentum of 2016, this February, Phone.com will be well represented at the The Communications and Business Transformation event of the year, ITEXPO. VoIP pioneer Alon Cohen will be participating in the panel discussion, “Bringing Telecom Innovations to Market Faster with APIs,” and Joel Maloff Senior Vice President at Phone.com and industry veteran, is moderating several others.

In addition, Phone.com has been sponsoring the Virtual Office online community for many years (thanks!), allowing TMC to cover the news and happenings in the space and bring the UC, UCaaS and Hosted VoIP communities together online.

Raven Guru The "Just Right" Marketing Agency

January 13, 2017

Not too big, not too small. All the experience, none of the fat.

David Byrd is one of the more experienced marketers in the tech space... He's worked at a large telco, a startup SIP trunking company, an RLEC, an MSP and more. He knows his stuff and is now out on his own with a unique offering for the tech and telecom space.

T-Mobile Leapfrogs U.S. Carriers Again with Digits

January 6, 2017

It was actually over ten years ago when we wrote about Mobile Stick from Bridgeport Networks (now part of CounterPath), an innovative device you plug into your laptop so you can take your mobile calls on your laptop. The idea was to allow carriers to leverage VoIP to add value to their core offerings. For some reason, the idea just didn’t catch on at the time.

Fast forward to a few years ago, WiFi calling has come to most carriers allowing the cell call to be taken via VoIP.

You Can Now Use your Phone on the Plane

September 9, 2016

The latest Windows 10 update makes it easier than ever to bring your mobile lifestyle onto an airplane. If you go into Settings and then Network & Internet, under Mobile hotspot, you can turn the service on and set a network name and password. As I write this on a Microsoft Surface Book, I decided to try the feature out. I then connected an iPhone and within a minute the phone rang.

Zang to Grow Communications PaaS offerings at All About the API

July 20, 2016

Here at the All About the API 2016 show in Las Vegas I got a chance to catch up with keynoter Davide Petramela to talk about Zang. The company is a division of Avaya focusing on Platform as a Service – it isn’t unlike Nexmo or Twilio but the difference may be the Avaya tie-in meaning, the company can draw on years of telecom heritage and experience.

In some ways, it may be closer to Kandy from GENBAND.

His keynote focused on Disrupting the Pace of Innovation where he said, "The next level of innovation in the digital economy is driven by the ability to embed communications right into cloud-based applications.” He continued, “Zang is on the forefront with dramatically simple tools and APIs that enable developers and designers to build their vision in a heartbeat."

With Polycom, Siris Capital Builds Impressive UC Holdings

July 11, 2016

Many where caught off guard when they learned Siris Capital outbid Mitel for Polycom but there are some good reasons for Siris to have made this move. After the Mitel acquisition was announced, I detailed the good and bad about the deal.

Here were the two comments which I placed in the bad category:

Bad: Polycom most logically should have ended up merging with Plantronics IMO – the companies are geographically close to one another and the synergies between headsets and other endpoints seemed like a perfect fit. I’ve thought this for many years.

Uber Picks Dialpad to Fuel its Growth

June 14, 2016

We’ve been covering cloud here at TMC for two decades – back when we called  these companies in this space ASPs and over these twenty years or so, there has been one constant in how they've gone to market. The initial target is small companies known as SMBs and then later they work up to larger companies. Grasshopper is an extreme example… They call themselves the entrepreneur’s phone system and while most have tried to move to larger installs, they seem to be stuck in place. Not that there is anything wrong with the approach, it’s just unusual.

IDT $19.99 Cloud UC Package Delivers Solid Channel Value

May 7, 2016

IDT Corporation has been a visionary in the VoIP space for almost two decades and I’ve always been impressed with the company’s technology and range of solutions in the SIP trunking and hosted PBX spaces. Recently, they have become very aggressive in the UC space, going after a channel and looking to be the disruptor in the market they helped create in the 1990s.

In an in-person interview, IDT/Net2Phone President Jonah Fink told me he thinks his company will keep people up at night. For example, IDT has had decades to build out its international infrastructure which includes POPs and nodes in five cities in Brazil as well as London, Hong Kong, Chile and Peru. They offer unlimited calling to Mexico and Canada as well as a core hosted PBX/SIP trunking plan which consists of South America, Western Europe and Central America.
