RingCentral: Disruptor Defends Turf through Innovation and Global Expansion

If you doubt cloud is an increasing threat to on-premise phone systems, consider RingCentral has exceeded 300,000 businesses meaning cloud has become highly disruptive to traditional PBX vendors. Smart disruptors know that once they become incumbents, they too become targets of disruption.

I often advise communications service providers the move to software solutions like NFV is critical because they need to be able to compete with OTT providers such as Facebook and WhatsApp who have a large audience of users who will use voice and video once available on their platforms. Likewise, cloud-UC players need to worry about text-based enterprise companies like Slack becoming major players in UC and collaboration.

He then said, “We're very invested in service providers and given their broadband infrastructure, ability to own quality of experience and have an existing distribution channel.”

Moreover, Chris showed me research which cites carrier customers saying they would be happy to buy these services from the carrier if the price is right.



Carriers providing contact center or even business voice services is not necessarily a new idea.

was one of the coolest services ever… It allowed you in the 1990s to call any number in the US for free via the web. It caught fire around the world and was one of the first viral hits on the web. If was an app, it would likely be worth north of $100 billion today but sadly, there were no ultra-successful app stores at the time. And if memory serves, our phones weren’t smart, all they did was allow us to flip them open and talk.

Craig Walker, became a founding investor in the company and later sold it to Yahoo.

GENBAND Makes NFV, SBC and fring Alliance news at MWC16

As carriers look to compete with OTT voice and video solutions, GENBAND is helping them via their new fring Alliance Revenue Engine Apps. As a reminder, the fring Alliance is a group of carriers working collectively to for all effective purposes to launch a cross-carrier Skype competitor. GENBAND makes it easy for operators to set up a virtually turnkey solution which allows mobile and other operators to provide an alternative OTT service.

SIP Forum and UNH Team on Seamless Enterprise Communications Deployment

The SIP Forum recently announced it’s continuing to do its part to ensure enterprise communications products fully interoperate with service provider networks. In fact, its new SIPconnect Certification Testing Program will be hosted by the University of New Hampshire Interoperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) and is designed to help ensure adherence to the SIPconnect Technical Recommendation currently at Version 1.1.



In an interview with Marc Robins SIPNOC Program Chair and Robert Kinder of Cox Business who also serves as a director, they mentioned the SIPconnect 1.1 spec is about five years old and is currently included in many RFPs. The goal of this new initiative however, is to increase interoperability between IP-PBX providers and service providers.

The idea is to plug in the box to the carrier with less headaches, in less time, and see installation issues and challenges which could have lasted weeks, be reduced to mere hours.

Dialogic Plunges into Apps with PowerVille

By technology standards, Dialogic is a veteran – having been established in 1983, the company has supplied communications infrastructure used by carriers, enterprises and developers for many, many decades. The New Jersey company enjoyed the benefit of providing solutions which could be paid for by arbitrage. In the late eighties and nineties, Dialogic boards allowed companies to build computer-telephony solutions which used off-the-shelf computers to compete with custom-built hardware solutions from manufacturers of telecom equipment. Even though Dialogic boards were not cheap, solutions based on their products cost far less than alternatives on the market thanks to the ability to leverage PCs and servers.

I first introduced you to Lifesize in 2007 explaining the company offered near telepresence quality at a fraction of the cost. At the time I said, “The goal of the company is to be the price/performance leader and I can vouch for the quality of their technology as I had a chance to see it for myself.” Two years later, Logitech, excited about the opportunity to move upmarket in the video space, acquired them for $400 million.

The move upmarket: Prior to this acquisition, I had a chance to cover Lifesize as it improved its technology with better quality cameras and other peripherals.

GENBAND's KandyMobile comes to NYC

GENBAND's Kandy communications Platform-as-a-Service solution recently celebrated its one-year anniversary by bringing its KandyMobile vehicle to popular nightclub, LIGHTBOX in New York City on September 30, 2015. Kandy allows any developer to embed real-time communications into their applications fairly easily but more importantly, the solutions subsequently become carrier-grade.

They had a number of interesting demos at the event. SkywriterMD (above) had its demo on the bus pictured at the start of this post.

Versay Solutions Moves to Support the Omnichannel World

A company known for professional services in the contact center –
Chicago-based Versay Solutions has more recently applied its skills in analytics and more to the world of omnichannel. According to Stephanie Laureys, Client Services Manager for the company – they are able to leverage leading-edge tech and assimilate it into existing technologies quite easily. For example, a demo she showed, consisted of an Amazon Echo speaker integrated with its middleware to allow a user to ask the speaker to send a text or make a conference call.

The company has deep experience in speech app and IVR design using open standards such as SIP, VXML and others.
