Invitation Only Video Interviews in San Jose with TMC

June 29, 2010

OK - it is kind of weird to call it "invitation only" if I am blogging about it but somehow it doesn't seem right to not let you know that TMC will be on-hand in Silicon Valley performing a host of video interviews with the best and brightest minds in tech and communications at the San Jose Marriott Tues, JULY 13th - Thurs, JULY 15th.

A sample screen shot of an interview which took place just outside of Washington DC

Here is a link to the most recent interviews I posted from a similar trip to the Washington DC area. If you are interested in consideration be sure to reach out immediately to Jaime Hernaez (jhernaez (at) tmcnet.com).

Since word got out about these interviews the spots have been filling up faster than in any city we have gone to so please be aware we expect all spots to fill up soon.

Here is a sample video from our recent DC trip

US World Cup Win, Earthquake, BP, Twitter and More

June 24, 2010

Yesterday was certainly made for Twitter as news flowed in so fast it was difficult to cover the major events with any more depth than 140 characters. First there was the report that the US had an exchange of generals in the Afghanistan war while at around the same time the BP oil spill took a turn for the worse when a robot accidentally knocked into some equipment causing the spill volume to increase.

All this while in World Cup news, the US prevailed in a historic win in the final moments of a game against Algeria - even though it seemed referee calls in back-to-back games were decidedly anti-American (US Vs. Algeria, US vs. Slovenia) resulting in two important goals being called invalid.

Skype Problem with your Payment Scam

June 16, 2010

TMC has been getting inundated with emails lately about problems with Skype accounts we don't own. We checked into the malicious script embedded in the emails and they appear to send you to servers in Estonia where your computer is likely to be infected with malware. Not that I need to tell you but - stay away - and be sure others who may fall for this scam know not to click.

Phone.com and the Next Phase of VoIP

June 14, 2010

If you want to thank someone for lowering your phone bill, you have a few options - you can thank the founders of Skype and Vonage or go back to the nineties and thank the many people at VocalTec who invented and popularized VoIP before anyone else even thought of it. Much of the reason TMC decided to launch a magazine titled Internet Telephony back in 1997 was because we saw the transformational power of the IP telephony gateways and software which VocalTec produced.

VocalTec co-founder Alon Cohen is a personal hero for what he did by literally changing the way the world communicates. Moreover, I am often called by patent attorneys who are involved in patent cases regarding technology which Cohen invented many years earlier.

TMC Gets Written up in Norwalk Hour Newspaper

June 4, 2010

I am fortunate that I get to speak reporters about my company from time to time and whenever I do I always worry until the article comes out. Reporters are busy (speaking from experience) and they don't always get all the facts right. I always blame myself when this happens - after all if you communicate in a clear, concise manner with an organized, structured system of segueing between topics, it is much easier to follow.

Personally I have sat in briefings with charismatic tech leaders who spend 30 minutes talking and when I look at my notes, I wonder what the heck was said.

TelX and Cisco Ethernet Exchange and Bandwidth Predictions

June 4, 2010

New TMC video personality discusses the latest communications and technology news

Please join me in welcoming Juliana Kenny to the TMC news room and to the TMC team where she will be writing, editing and producing videos. Here is her first video which discusses the newly launched TelX Ethernet Exchange - which will allow carriers and enterprises to interconnect their Ethernet networks. This Cisco-powered service should be quite successful based on my early discussions with TelX customers as well as TelX executives.

DashPad Brings Widgets to iPad via Safari

June 4, 2010

For most developers, Apple's App Store is a dream as it allows you to publish an application, allow Cupertino to deal with distribution and then receive regular paychecks as products are purchased and downloaded. That is of course unless your application or class of apps find itself/themselves in Apple's crosshairs. Most recently Apple decided that widget-based apps and those which create their own desktops will be banned from the company's store - even if they have been approved in the past.

Coincidentally a company called PXL Creations recently released a Safari-based desktop called DashPad for the iPad which supports its own custom widgets for a clock, calendar, Yellow Pages, calculator, unit converter and notepad.

AT&T's new Data Plans Good for Wireless Investment?

June 2, 2010

As Gary Kim points out, AT&T will soon be revamping its data rates and plans for iPad users. Currently the plan is $30 for an unlimited amount of data per month. Going forwards, DataPlus will provide 200 MB of data for $15 per month (additional 200 MB chunks of data also cost $15), and DataPro, which provides 2 GBytes of data for $25 per month, with every additional GByte costing $10.
