Happy Holidays and Thanks!

December 15, 2006

I would like to take a moment and thank all my readers and wish you all a great holiday season and a Happy New Year. In addition I want to specifically thank you all for visiting TMCnet so frequently as we have once again hit one million unique visitors in the month on November according to WebTrends. This is the second time this year we have done so. (Apparently our October numbers are still being run -- long story. We may have hit this number in that month as well.)   Thank you for making TMCnet the largest community of communications and technology decision makers in the world.   A few things you should know about TMCnet going forward are the site will soon have a more streamlined look that is easier on the eyes.

Happy Holidays Vonage From Skype

December 15, 2006

Today I am back on the road heading up to New England again. I am not such a fan of cold weather so I usually avoid going north when possible this close to winter. Thankfully it seems like we are having very mild weather with a high in the fifties. Lucky me.   And luck is something the VoIP industry is experiencing as Skype recently decided to stop giving away free PC to phone calling in the US and Canada.

Saving Money on IP Communications Education

December 14, 2006

If you haven’t been watching, the early-bird deadline for conferences at Internet Telephony Conference & Expo (register) is approaching --tomorrow actually -- and we are talking about a savings of up to $1,000. The show is in 40 days so be sure to make your travel arrangements now as hotel prices will skyrocket soon. For many people there company foots the bill so this isn’t important. To us however, we would rather have you save some of that hard earned cash and spend it with one of the exhibitors at the show.

AT&T/BellSouth FCC Vote to Take Place

December 7, 2006

The AT&T/BellSouth merger has been deliberated by the FCC for quite some time. On October 13 of this year reports circulated about how the FCC vote was to be pushed back. It is now almost two months later and there may be an end to the deadlock.   As you may recall Commissioner Robert McDowell was not voting due to a conflict of interest. As you may recall Robert McDowell worked for COMPTEL an association who was publicly against the merger.

Linksys CIT310 Phone for Yahoo Messenger

November 8, 2006

Tom has done it again with his review of the Linksys CIT30 Phone for Yahoo! Messenger. My take on this nifty new gadget is it is great but. But what you ask? How can such a cool new sleek device with built in presence and the ability to connect with all your Yahoo!

Bridgeport Networks Funding

November 4, 2006

If you’re a wireless carrier you know the disruptive combination of IP communications and wireless networks such as WiFi, WiMAX and others could really hurt your business over time. If you are smart you will have already developed technology allowing your wireless service to be extended onto the broadband networks to save precious capacity and also minimize the need for your customers to go and start experimenting with free VoIP offerings from the likes of Skype and others.

One company looking to be the glue connecting wireless providers and VoIP soft clients is Bridgeport Networks whose MobileSTICK USB-SIM solution transforms personal computers into voice, multimedia messaging and presence terminals for mobile operator services.

The company recently made news when it announced $13 million dollars in funding. One would imagine their investors think the company is on the right track. Bridgeport Networks are in a pretty interesting area of telecom and wireless carriers have to look at developing innovative solutions that are sticky to retain customers.

RSS in your IM

October 30, 2006

If you need to get up to the minute updates on your RSS feeds such as this one from Dan York (which alerted me to this story), you want to check out the RSS Robot which takes an RSS feed and connects it with Skype so you get an IM in Skype when new RSS info comes through. I already get alerted to new RSS feeds from my reader so this isn’t too useful for me. Still it could be useful to someone who is hooked on Skype and whose RSS reader doesn’t alert them to new content.

As we begin to see more and more products integrate with Skype the question becomes when we see a full-fledged office-like environment evolve around Skype. First we would need an e-mail client – perhaps this AJAX-based one from BlueTie will do.

UAE Bans Skype

October 29, 2006

It isn’t too surprising that Skype is being outlawed in various countries such as the United Arab Emirates. The unfortunate consequence of such actions is people used to getting 2 cent a minute calls find they are now 75 cents per minute. This is the same old story. The local phone company finds a way to block Skype and then their revenue skyrockets.

My take is the incumbent phone companies are generally in trouble around the world and they need to find new ways to generate revenue in a VoIP-dominated world.
