The Importance of VoIP Security

Tom Keating recently blogged about VoIP security and I wholeheartedly agree with his comments. The way  see it the holy grail of hacking is to be able to get access to conversations. E-mails have been stolen, credit card numbers, social security numbers and VoIP is the next target. We often don't think about the ramifications of IP telephony the way we should. The fact is that the benefits of IP, the ability to access the network easily regardless of location, the open standards and other features are what make it such a tempting target. I loathe the day that hackers post  VoIP conversations converted into WAV files on a web site. Of course the industry has done a great job so far in preventing these sorts of things from happening but is it the industry really that we should thank or the fact that VoIP wasn't used as commonly as it is today. As VoIP proliferates I suppose there will come a time when networks are broken into and damage is done. It is difficult to know exactly what damage can be done but the hacking is bound to happen. Tom, I am glad you put this VoIP Security resource page up and I encourage everyone to read it to avoid the pitfalls so you don't become a statistic. I am not an alarmist but at some point someone's VoIP network will be compromised. It is just logic and common sense and I know it will happen. It is foolish to think otherwise.
