Vonage Goes IPO

Apparently all the rumors of Vonage being acquired are now dead as an IPO seems likely. I suppose it is still possible for someone to come in at the last second and buy the company. A cable company or international service provider? BellSouth? According to the WSJ and a Vonage IPO post from Tom Keating the IPO filing is forthcoming. The WSJ article is probably not as complete as it should be as it leaves out any mention of Skype and Google as competitors to Vonage. Worse, it mentions AT&T as a competitive threat and  if anything AT&T is less of a threat to Vonage than Packet8 at the moment. AT&T hasn’t actually marketed their CallVantage service in months. If they have it has been very low key and under my radar.

Tom mentions that perhaps the Google VoIP announcement may have had something to do with the Vonage IPO decision and I don’t think that is the case. I am pretty sure Vonage founders have been evaluating their exit strategies for some time now and at around a million subscribers their story becomes a good one.
