Andy Abramson on Verizon Patents

I just came across Andy Abramson’s post on Verizon’s VoIP patents which discusses the fact that 3COM may be one of the companies sitting on a VoIP patent eerily similar and earlier than one of the Verizon patents being used against Vonage. This reinforces my earlier post on the VoIP patent mess from today discussing how many companies have related patents that can potentially be used to overturn the patents Verizon is using to sue Vonage.

More on The VoIP Patent Mess

A number of people in the telecom industry tell me they have looked at the Verizon patents being used against Vonage and they say they have been doing the things that are claimed in the patents before Verizon filed. My sources further claim in some cases there are patents which have been granted to companies which conflict with the patents which Verizon has. Of course this is not unusual but no one has anything to gain from suing Verizon to get the phone company’s patents overturned. They would only do this if they are sued and this won’t happen as Verizon is too smart to sue companies that can overturn their own patents.

Flaming Cringely

I grew up reading Robert X. Cringely so it is challenging for me to say anything negative about this witty writer who once graced the pages of InfoWorld. In the interest of objectivity however it is worth pointing out that George Ou and others are none too happy with Cringely because he seems to be unresponsive and has recently made a bogus accusation regarding net neutrality pertaining to his broadband provider.   See George Ou’s blog for the facts on this matter.

New 8x8 Patent

8x8 the parent company of Packet8 announced today they have been awarded U.S. Patent No. 7,202,884 which focuses on the processing of images from a communications system to a computing system. This patent is important as technology companies need a strong patent portfolio to protect against being sued by other companies with patents they could potentially infringing upon.   The company’s patent portfolio is now up to a total of 67 for 8x8. This is a great number relative to the company’s size.

Vonage CEO Shuffle

I know I have been writing about Vonage a great deal lately and I am not sure whether to apologize about this fact or not but it is worth pointing out that Vonage and Sprint may reach some sort of business arrangement as a result of their patent dispute according to one of my favorite Canadian telecom analysts Jon Arnold.   In addition customer, according to Jon's blog ARPU isn’t expected to go up or down which Jon sees as bad news. Well at least it isn’t expected to go down. There is still pricing pressure on the market and Vonage hasn’t rolled out any must-have paid services lately. Hopefully they have some up their sleeve and can get that ARPU to steadily increase.   Garett Smith has comments on yesterday's Vonage conference call as well – specifically – who would want this Vonage CEO job?
