Skype Soap Opera Update

October 15, 2009

A fascinating bit of reporting from the Wall Street Journal confirms some things that many in the communications industry already knew and some things we didn't.

  1. eBay doesn't get Skype - this is as obvious as it gets.
  2. The current Skype Management and investors don't want to deal with Niklas Zennstrom or Janus Friis
  3. Mike Volpi, past Joost CEO wanted to change Skype's underlying technology to SIP - knowing this would upset Skype's founders Zennstrom and Friis - Coincidentally about five years ago at ITEXPO Niklas Zennstrom was giving a keynote and at the end of the presentation Andy Voss, founder of Session Border Conrol company Sansay asked why Skype doesn't support SIP. Zennstrom replied accurately that there are far more Skype endpoints than SIP endpoints.

What amazes me the most about this situation is that to all the people who understand Skype, there is a tremendous amount of value in the company and it is worth fighting over tooth and nail. To those who don't understand it - eBay for example, there is limited value.

Partnering for SEO Success

October 13, 2009

In the last two weeks I drove (well I was in the car anyway) for more than 1,500 miles meeting with tech companies in Montreal, Ontario, Massachusetts, Rochester, NY, Los Angeles and San Diego. The last stop on my latest trip was at CTIA where I saw dozens of companies from around the globe.

Most of my travels involve learning about companies in the communications and technology space and often advising them on how they can be more successful. Sometimes I get to see some very innovative solutions which I can't share at the time for a multitude of reasons (embargos, etc) and other times I get a firsthand look at things which I share as soon as I can.

An Amazing Week for Wireless at CTIA

October 12, 2009

Where is my Mobile Data?

An overwhelming amount of wireless, communications and tech news is the best way to describe the last few weeks. Perhaps one of the most important nuggets is a catastrophic loss of T-Mobile USA Sidekick customer data and if you have one of these nifty little gadgets, be aware the wireless carrier asks that you not reset it. This issue highlights the problems with SaaS and cloud-based services.

Rich Tehrani's Favorite Tech Tools

October 6, 2009

I have been meaning to thank my tech vendors for a while - the companies which allow me to be as productive as possible on the road. I am going to be brutally honest and not sugar coat so brace yourselves.

Verizon EVDO - without this gem of a service I am not sure where I would be. I am able to upload 30Mb files in rapid-fire fashion as I perform video interviews worldwide.

SPEC: World's First Smart Ecosystem Community Launches

September 18, 2009

Leveraging Ecosystems Eclipses Developing Products

Widgets for TVs, application stores for wireless phones, applets for the connected home and automobiles... The trend is clear as smart ecosystems have emerged on the scene as a new way to generate revenue while locking in customers to specific hardware/software solutions. For many manufacturers such as Avaya, Cisco, RIM, Nokia, Apple and makers of televisions, it is no longer adequate to focus exclusively on the products your company develops.

AT&T Moves to 4G in Miami and Elsewhere

September 9, 2009

I travel a great deal and have had a chance to test AT&T's wireless

service in areas such as Dallas, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Los Angeles, San Francisco and others. What I have noticed is the service is improving and aside from occasional glitches, surfing the web on an Apple iPhone 3Gs is a more pleasant experience. I don't think it approaches Verizon Wireless yet but then again, VZW doesn't have to deal with the onslaught of wireless data requests generated from legions of iPhone users. AT&T has an opportunity of a lifetime to upgrade its network before it loses iPhone exclusivity (assuming it does).

ITEXPO West 2009: Terry Matthews Keynote

September 2, 2009

Sir Terry Matthews gave a fascinating keynote address today to a standing room only crowd at TMC's ITEXPO and started his address by discussing the opportunity he sees in the communications and technology markets. You know from my past writing that I consider Terry to be one of the most incredible people I have met - he has started 89 companies primarily in communications. He has also started companies in the leisure space - hotels and golf resorts.

He is worth billions and he still works as hard as anyone I know. He travels the world and closes business.

ITEXPO West 2009 Day 2 Start

September 2, 2009

I had a great time last night networking with people from ITEXPO, 4GWE, M2M Evolution Smart Grid Summit and the other events here in downtown Los Angeles.

After the reception, I went to a dinner at the Westin Bonaventure show hotel and then a local restaurant. Then I went back to the TMC suite at the hotel where a bunch of attendees and the TMC team gathered, discussed the state of the markets and exchanged stories and analysis.

Some of the topics worth sharing were debates on the importance of the cloud as well as whether social networking is important in the business to consumer space. There were many more discussions and I hope to share them soon.

I am headed to the Los Angeles Convention Center soon and hope to see you there.
