New Yeastar UCaaS; Are 8x8 and RingCentral in Trouble?

January 19, 2018

Yeastar, a Chinese UC, gateway and phone player just announced its Yeastar Cloud PBX will be unveiled at ITEXPO next month in Florida. “We are excited to be back at ITEXPO East again this year,” said Alan Shen, CEO of Yeastar, “We deem ITEXPO a great platform to launch our brand new offering, Yeastar Cloud PBX, to the world. Having been field-tested in the beta program, this profitable multi-instance hosted business voice solution could be a perfect fit for most of the ITEXPO attendees.”

When we learned the news, the first thing that came to mind was a similar competitive situation last decade.

Digital Transformation Helps Lockheed Martin go Hypersonic!

January 16, 2018

Digital Transformation is becoming the buzzword of the decade and its meaning is rather broad. We like to call it the application of the latest computing technology to improve business processes. More specifically, using cloud, AI, cognitive computing, mobile, IoT, big, data, and other tech like chatbots and APIs. The list of technology is really never-ending, we could have added sharing economy, autonomous vehicles, smart cities, smart buildings, mesh networks, blockchain and so on.

Practically speaking, companies need to disrupt themselves or become new disruptors depending on the age of the organization.

For Most, The Web is Alive and Well

December 22, 2017

Go to any of the app stores and look around at the top app categories and you'll notice that many are entertainment, productivity or messaging/communications related. Lately, AR apps have become popular as well but this could be temporary. We say this because eventually, many apps will have AR built-in.

Is there a theme to most of the top apps? Yes. Applications you would or could use quite often.

What is worth noting is business apps - or those which replicate functions of a search engine such as hotel booking aren't generally at the top.

Why?

20 Years Later, Dialpad Disrupts Communications Again

December 8, 2017

History was made this week As Dialpad launched a free version of their UCaaS platform for up to five users. This amounts to a savings of over one-thousand-dollars. Craig Walker the Founder and CEO of the company launched the original Dialpad just under 20 years ago, an innovative service allowing anyone to call a US number for free over the internet via their web portal.

Craig has been a visionary in the space for the decades we have known him.

MegaPath Leverages Years of Experience to Lead in SD-WAN

December 5, 2017

MegaPath is in a unique position in the SD-WAN space as they were on the leading edge of the MPLS curve and SD-WAN in many cases is becoming a competing or even next-generation technology. In 2012, the company even hosted an MPLS University which we attended at ITEXPO in Florida. Dan Foster is the COO of the company and we decided to get his take on the market.

Invoxia NVX 200 Phone Connects to Apple Watch 3

October 17, 2017

Forget Dick Tracey, Invoxia takes your watch phone one-step further by allowing you to use a desk phone as the interface to your Apple Watch 3.

Technically, it is impressive to think you no longer need a phone - your watch connects you directly to the cellular network and bluetooth connects the watch to the Invoxia NVX 200 phone.

Serge Renouard, CEO and cofounder of invoxia said, “The Apple Watch 3 is part of this new step in the history of technologies that frees us from succumbing to the object." He continued, "The conjunction between cloud and specialized, contextual equipment like the NVX 200, allows any professional wearing only an Apple Watch to benefit from the perfect equipment at the office – the kind that spontaneously connects to the watch and turns it into the best of desk phones”.

The dock comes with an adapter system that allows it to also plug into smartphones regardless of connector such as USB-C, Micro-USB or Lightning.

Spikko Brings Multiple Numbers and Recording to Mobile Phones

October 9, 2017

While there are a number of companies who can add phone numbers to mobile phones via VoIP, Spikko takes a different approach. The company allows a mobile device to have a single SIM and multiple local numbers with global call-recording added as one of its optional services. The company supports most countries but there are around 50 primary ones.

I spoke with company representative Ron Barak about the company's differentiators and he mentioned that they have their data center in the Amazon cloud in Ireland and from there they allow phones to work as local devices on multiple networks. They have negotiated great rates for customers - 2-3 cents per minute per call, $10/month for call recording and $5-$6 per number.

AT&T Connected Health Foundry Celebrates Success

September 23, 2017

Earlier today we discussed how some years back IMS provided a platform for carriers to roll out applications. The industry discussed the concept for a number of years – magazines, associations and events sprung up to support carrier efforts but the market never happened the way anyone thought it would. This was in-part because Apple rolled out an App Store and then Google followed and developers didn’t need to work with carriers. It was much faster to integrate with the hardware in the hands of the consumer.

Streann OTT Hopes to be the Evolution of TV

September 23, 2017

"The revolution and evolution of the golden age of entertainment is happening right now," according to Giovanni Punzo the CEO of Streann Media. The company touts itself as the multiscreen next-generation monetization platform for delivering linear TV, VoD and proprietary  interactive services to end-users anytime and anywhere.

The idea behind the platform is fairly simple - allow customers to provide Netflix-like services with localized content. The solution has a built-in ad platform, app editor builder and allows the full distribution and monetization of content.

In addition, the company has a provisional patent on a new way to show video ads - they can be seen in split screen. This is a replacement of the pre-roll which many people including us have grown tired of.

The Miami based company is doing very well in the Latin America market and its HQ in Miami likely doesn't hurt.

Nominate leaders you believe deserve special recognition for their ability to initiate and drive change in the industry. Your nominee could be from a large company, where change is often harder to implement, or from a smaller company or startup where, this particular Agent of Change has taken technological innovation to heart and is creating opportunities that have the potential to change not just a company, but the world, for the better.
