Cablevision Shows CTI stands for Computer-TV Integration

February 24, 2010

How big an industry will computer-television integration industry become and will it dwarf the multibillion dollar computer-telephony integration market which was responsive for originating the CTI acronym?

How will carriers and cable companies navigate the new world of computer-television integration and can it be profitable for them?

Video revenue which carriers and cablecos rely on will continue to decline over time and YouTube and Hulu are just a few services which are responsible for this migration from television to the computer video watching. Still, as carriers cope with this transformation, for consumers, there is still no easy way to transfer content from YouTube to that shiny new flat screen TV in the living room. There are devices like ZeeVee which connect to your computer and broadcast the output to a cable channel - accessible to all the TVs in your house but none of computer/TV integration products has become mainstream - not even Apple TV.

The ZeeVee idea has been emulated by Cablevision, the cable company serving parts of the northeast and will be turned into a service soon....

The Microsoftization of Google

February 10, 2010

You have to give Google credit; they seem to want to make the world a better place by opening up the world and making technology and services more accessible. And they are powerful enough to make it all happen - search revenue pours in and is being allocated to services which compete with Amazon and Microsoft among others. In the mobile phone space they go up against Palm, RIM, Nokia and Microsoft.

Yesterday they announced a new social networking initiative called Buzz which is supposed to unseat Facebook and twitter.

Supercomm Dies, What it Means to Carriers, The Industry

February 8, 2010

Last week, Doug Mohney had the big scoop that Supercomm will be cancelled - he blogged it as a rumor which was subsequently confirmed by the TIA and USTelecom today. As a show organizer myself I get a lot of questions regarding what this news means to our industry. Rather than continuing to opine on a person-by-person basis, I thought it made sense to put my thoughts in writing.

Tech, Telecom: The Energy is Back

February 3, 2010

Communications, wireless, consumer electronics, cloud computing, virtualization -- in a turbulent market, it is good to be in technology.

Monster.com was one of the companies I considered to have a natural monopoly in the US job search market a decade ago. Amazingly, social media sites like LinkedIn and Craigslist are making Job sites less relevant and as a result Monster just picked up HotJobs for $225 in cash to shore up its decreasing market share.

A decade or so ago it was common knowledge that satellite radio would eventually make a huge dent in the business of traditional radio companies.

Patent Pooling Taking Off

February 2, 2010

I suggested companies join the RPX patent protection club back in 2008 as I have seen how patent litigation can destroy a company's profitability and force it to lose focus. RPX as you may remember is a firm whose goal is to allow companies to buy into a pool of patents which can be used to protect them against future lawsuits. The idea is a company will think twice about pursuing a patent lawsuit if you can countersue using a huge pool of patents.

Since my original entry, Microsoft, Nokia and Sony have signed up for the service.

HTML 5 Plus H.264 not as Open as you Think

January 25, 2010

If you stream any video on your site, this news could drastically increase your future costs.

Here is an excellent article from Christopher Blizzard on HTML 5 video and H.264 which delves into the potential problems we could see on the web when a company demands to get paid for technologies which users may have thought were open. In other words, HTML 5 when combined with H.264 is not the open standard many hoped it would be.

Here are some excerpts:   Learning from GIF

The web in 1999 was a lot smaller than it is today, so a lot of people don't remember what happened back when Unisys decided to start to enforce their GIF-related patents.
