VoIP market grows 16.5 percent

August 18, 2005

The worldwide carrier-grade VoIP market grew 16.5 percent in Q2 2005 over Q1 2005, according to an international market researcher's report released today.

The market surge came as a result of competitive price reductions and carrier upgrades, particularly in the Central America/Latin America and EMEA markets, Dittberner Associates, Inc. stated in its "Worldwide Q2 NGN Shipments Analysis."

According to Thursday's press release, over 16 million media gateway, softswitch and integrated VoIP ports were shipped in Q2.

Nortel led all vendors with 3.2 million VoIP ports shipped (3.2 million) in Q2 2005, accounting for 20.54 percent of the global market share.

Rounding out the top five vendors were: Siemens (2.9 million, 18.17 percent); Huawei Technologies (2.59 million, 16.19 percent); Sonus Networks (2 million, 12.7 percent); and Tekelec (1.39 million, 8.74 percent).

Smaller vendors accounted for the remaining 3.78 million ports, representing 23.66 percent of the global market share.

According to the release, Nortel also generated the most revenue in both media gateway and softswitch equipment spaces.

"Dittberner expects to see further growth in VoIP equipment shipments over the next quarters as the migration to packet telephony picks up pace around the globe," the release states.
