Can We Do Anything about iPod Audio Quality?

July 23, 2008

In the iPod age, music sound quality has been dumbed down to "Fisher-Price toy" levels, said one of my all time favorite rockers, Neil Young, at Fortune's Brainstorm Tech Conference.

"Apple has taken a detour down the convenience highway," he said, talking about what he considers to be the poor audio quality of MP3.

He's currently working on a multimedia archiving project of his entire career, which he says should be available as a series of Blu-Ray discs later this year. He hopes that becomes the basis for an alternative digital platform featuring higher audio quality that will be made available to other musicians.

Can't Anybody Make Up Their Mind (AT&T)!!!

July 18, 2008

Free Wi-Fi access from AT&T on the iPhone?

More like "now you see it, now you don't"?

Or more like, "let's try it for a while and see" -- or maybe "we can change our mind and nobody will notice" -- maybe before the days of blogs and instant communications and publishing that might have held true, but not any more.

iPhone 3G Now a Week Old! And What a Week!

July 18, 2008

The Apple iPhone 3G is now a week old and what a week it's been!

How about this for out of the box -- 1 million sold in the first weekend!

And now I'm wondering how sales kept up through the week ...

But yikes! Now there's a shortage!

Aren't gadgets great! Too many, too little ... it's not easy to be a manufacturer when you can have problems about selling too little product and then too much product! Yikes again!

T-Mobile VoIP Shenanigans - AGAIN!

July 18, 2008

I've written about T-Mobile's VoIP blocking shenanigan's here, here, and here.  Not to mention their blocking of MinuteWatcher for tracking cellphone minute usage. I also wrote how Truphone won an injunction against T-mobile ordering T-Mobile UK to stop blocking calls to Truphone. T-Mobile's heavy-handed blocking tactics is getting a bit old.

Well, according to TUAW, T-mobile is at it again.

What's Your Favorite iPhone 3G App?

July 17, 2008

I know it's still early days in the history of the iPhone 3G, but with a million sold already (and steadily counting!), wanted to find out what some of the most popular iPhone 3G apps are.

Now I could go to some other places and get the Top 10 or Top 25 list, but I wanted to get some direct feedback from you.

Do you have a favorite that you can't believe you lived without until now?

So let us know, OK?

HyperOffice for the Apple iPhone

July 16, 2008

Steve Leon, HyperOffice's PR rep emailed me last night to tell me about the latest version of HyperOffice which works with the new Apple iPhone. HyperOffice gives business users of iPhone the ability to share documents with and without Microsoft Exchange, Sharepoint. HyperOffice today launched a new public beta of business collaboration tools that do more than connect the first and second-generation Apple iPhones to secure corporate email, contacts, calendars, tasks and notes.

This second beta of HyperOffice for the iPhone includes usability enhancements and, more significantly, access to shared documents, using built-in tools that connect to corporate messaging systems and operate as an alternative to Microsoft Exchange and Sharepoint. "This is what the new iPhone 3G does not have," said Farzin Arsanjani, president of HyperOffice.

"MobileMe and support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync begin to finally give business users of the iPhone the ability to sync and share calendars, contacts, email and tasks.

Want To Know What the iPhone 3G Really Cost?

July 16, 2008

How about $174.33 ...

And while the bill of materials doesn't include the price of shipping the phone, selling it or creating the software that runs it, the inexpensive design is said to be a deliberate move by Apple to fulfill its short-term goal of establishing as much marketshare as possible in the iPhone's history.

In addition to keeping many of the same parts, including the Samsung processor, Apple saves money by redesigning the internal layout.

Rather than two tightly connected circuit boards, for example, the iPhone 3G uses a single but more durable board. The battery is also no longer soldered to the device, making it easier for technicians to replace the battery.

(Or for those in the know ...)

Windows Mobile gets 3G VoIP - WiFi not Required!

July 15, 2008

Last year Jajah launched the Windows Mobile 6 native SIP client for the the EM-ONE. Frederik Hermann, Director Global Marketing for Jajah emailed me to say, "Today we launched phase 2 of this project, EMOBILE users can now get their own local DID (Direct Inward Dialing number) and can be called at this number from any regular phone, which turns their device into a fully functioning mobile phone, without a cellular connection." Importantly, it features HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access), also known as 3G. So in other words, the SIP-based EM-ONE becomes a fully-functional inbound & outbound calling device that only needs a 3G data connection. 100% VoIP for inbound & outbound calling.

iPhone Microsoft Exchange Email Problems

July 15, 2008

Paul Robichaux, is a Microsoft MVP, a Mac user since 1984, an iPhone user since July 8th of last year, and an Exchange admin since 1995. So he's got the technical credentials to know what he's talking about when he blasts the new iPhone's issues with Microsoft Exchange integration.

Here's a teaser:

I should point out that Exchange ActiveSync is a protocol that supports lots of different content types and protocol option. Apple, like most other EAS licensees, has implemented a subset of EAS.

1 Million iPhones and Counting ...

July 14, 2008

Guess all of the problems haven't stemmed the tide of iPhone sales since the 11th, with Apple announcing sales of 1 million units just a couple of days after launch (see the official press release here).

How about this quote: "iPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world."

Seems that all of the problems must start once you have the phone ...

What a wonderful world ...
