I just finished writing a product review of Sendia for Customer Interaction Solutions when I received this email below about how a reality TV show is using Sendia's technology. Normally I would not "taint" my blog by promoting a reality TV show (i.e. trash TV), but I deemed it news worthy... I promise to never mention another reality TV show again in my blog. Honest.
Sendia’s advanced wireless platform technology on the BlackBerry was recently used to assist Pardee Homes in completing a home in seven days for ABC’s smash hit, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Pardee President and CEO, Mike McGee said Sendia’s outstanding wireless technology was a key component to maintaining the rapid construction pace required of Pardee's project managers, who used handheld BlackBerry devices equipped with Sendia’s wireless application to access and enter up-to-the-minute data and complex scheduling and re-scheduling calculations through every phase of the construction project, which miraculously, was completed on time given the intense weather conditions.
About the Episode
Fans of ABC’s Sunday night hit show were treated to edge of the seat entertainment on March 27 in the episode the celebrity design team dubbed one of their favorite projects to date.
In February, the Extreme Team partnered with renowned developers Pardee Homes to build an energy-efficient house for a family of 11 within the reality show’s seven day timeframe.
In spite of torrential rain storms in what has been declared California’s second wettest winter in recorded history, Pardee’s volunteer team of employees and subcontractors built an incredible home on a small lot in Santa Fe Springs for a recently blended family, including the Leomitis, their three children, mother-in-law, and five foster kids, the Higgins children who were recently orphaned when their parents died two months apart.
Building a home for a family of 11 in seven days is a tall order, and with numerous weather delays, at one point completing the task on time seemed to be a nearly impossible goal. Led by Pardee President and CEO Mike McGee, more than 450 men and women worked passionately around the clock in horrendous conditions to build a special home the deserving Leomiti-Higgins family.
At home viewers and volunteers alike were surprised by a visit from California’s Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, who welcomed the family to their custom home at the show’s conclusion. Pardee Homes — selected builder for ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition — uses Sendia and BlackBerry technology to make dream come true for deserving family
SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 12, 2005 — Sendia Corporation, a leading wireless business application platform company, today announced that its wireless technology was used by Pardee Homes, the featured homebuilder for an episode of ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, to assist in the successful completion of a home for the Leomiti/Higgins family in Santa Fe Springs, Calif.
Pardee Homes used Sendia's platform and wireless application, which runs on a Research In Motion BlackBerry wireless handheld, to build a completely new, energy efficient home within a 7-day timeframe. Sendia proudly donated significant development time and resources to adapt its existing wireless software for this important project.
Pardee Homes partnered with Sendia and other trusted subcontractors and suppliers to create the Leomiti/Higgins home. Pardee's longstanding ties with its trade partners were a key component of the company's successful build, according to Pardee President and CEO Mike McGee.
"The teamwork that went into this energy-efficient home was extraordinary, and unrelentingly bad weather during our build really dramatized what we knew already, that Sendia was outstanding," said McGee. "We commend Sendia for generous contributions of time and materials, and for true dedication and perseverance during very challenging circumstances; Pardee's entire "Extreme" team was just amazing."
"Many of our employees are huge fans of the show, and when Pardee Homes, a longtime Sendia customer, asked us to participate, we jumped at the chance to help," said Alex Klyce, executive vice president of Sendia. "We gladly donated engineering time to ensure the product would meet Pardee's needs for the project and are truly happy knowing that our efforts played a role in giving this deserving family their dream home."
For the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition project, Sendia modified its existing wireless application to accommodate the rapid construction pace required by Pardee's project managers. The modified application allowed project managers to wirelessly access and enter up-to-the-minute data and complex scheduling calculations on the BlackBerry through every phase of the construction project. This data was then fed back to a server where a construction management software application returned updates to project managers, keeping their teams on schedule.
"Wireless connectivity can significantly improve productivity and workflow in the field and Sendia's Hardhat application is further expanding the value of BlackBerry in the construction market by allowing supervisors to interact with back-end systems and stay on top of projects without leaving the construction site," said Mark Guibert, vice president of Corporate Marketing at Research In Motion.
Wireless Technology at Work
In addition to hammers and nail guns, the toolbox of today's homebuilders has expanded to include wireless devices such as the RIM BlackBerry, which are equipped with specialized applications from companies like Sendia. Sendia's wireless technology connects field workers with server-based data via wireless enabled handheld devices, allowing them to be more productive while working outside of the office. For homebuilders such as Pardee Homes, wireless access has allowed their field supervisors to advance beyond paper-based and disconnected laptop solutions by extending functionality to the BlackBerry so project managers can roam freely around construction sites and remain connected to scheduling data and back-end management systems. Sendia's wireless application is currently used by 150 of Pardee Homes' field supervisors to streamline onsite project management for the construction of new homes.
