In a recent AARP poll, an estimated 88 percent of seniors throughout the U.S. say they feel safer and more secure with access to a cell phone.

To help in this effort, a non-profit program -– Phones-For-Life –- has been established to collect used cell phones for people over the age of 60. These phones, programmed to be either 911-only phones or phones with 100 in-case-of-emergency minutes, are then donated to anyone over 60, free of charge.

Phones-For-Life has recently extended its reach to schools. Through a new program, Phones-For-Education, students raise money for their school by collecting used cell phones and donating them to seniors in the community.

What's not to love about this?

I have researched the Jitterbug phone and feel that the service that comes with the phone, as well as the features on the phones, make it the best choice for seniors. I mean, seniors don't even have to dial numbers, they can use the Jitterbug operators to do it for them! I read a review about the phone here, http://www.jitterbugseniorcellphones.com/, and that lead me to do some more research. I had been thinking of getting a phone for my grandparents and they hate most phones out there. I will see if they like the Jitterbug phone.

The phones4life site seems to be down. Anyone know if it's changed or if the program has ended?

In any case, I'm not so sure about having only an emergency cell phone. After all, you do have always have to keep it charged, and you do need to be able to use it quickly when you need to.

If you never use the phone, you are less likely to keep it charged. If you never use it, you may find it difficult to do so in an emergency.

A better solution would perhaps involve donating minutes to a pool so that some minutes would be transferred every month to one of these phones.

I think phones for seniors is a great idea. They arn't to tech savvy so I don't know to many older folks that own a cell phone...

This does seem like it would make it safer for them in any case like getting lost or crimes, maybe have fallen... This could save lives.
