Just got this press release about a mobile satellite TV antenna that you can install in your car. One of the problems with moving a satellite antenna is losing the "lock" onto the satellite. Ever tried installing DirecTV yourself? I did, and it was a pain in the ass to get it to get a continuous tone, hold onto the dish, and drill it into my deck all at the same time. The slightest angle variation and the lock was gone. So it's pretty amazing that there are satellite antennas these days that can maintain a lock even while moving.

The military has had them for a long time now. RVs and boats were the probably the earliest adopters of mobile satellite technology, but the dishes tend to be large and unwieldy. Now with this product, even cars can get in on the action since the antenna is just 5" high.

Of course, then there's the controversial issue of people watching TV while driving. In fact, a man accused of watching a DVD and killing someone was just recently acquitted of manslaughter.

Anyway, here's the press release:
A Gift for the Whole Family - Live Satellite TV in Your Car with the TracVision A5

MIDDLETOWN, RI - September 23, 2004 - Instead of "visions of sugar plums," you'll see TracVision® sitcom runs - live in your vehicle. Now you can enjoy 125+ channels of live DIRECTV® satellite TV programming and commercial-free music with KVH Industries' high-performance, groundbreaking TracVision A5 satellite television antenna, which provides uninterrupted reception of satellite TV signals on open roads throughout the continental U.S.

The TracVision A5 includes a deluxe, automotive satellite receiver that mounts easily under a seat or in the trunk of your car and the low-profile antenna easily integrates with any in-vehicle video system. Standing 5" high, the sleek housing mounts securely to your roof rack or directly to the roof and its rugged design is built to withstand the rigors of the road.

With TracVision A5 and the DIRECTV TOTAL CHOICE® MOBILE programming package, you and your kids can enjoy satellite TV anywhere you travel, anytime - and leave the DVDs and videotapes at home. Now you won't miss Rudolph, Frosty, or "A Christmas Story" while on the way to Grandma's house.

Free Satellite TV on PC?Category: Cool Stuff , Video
"I saw a website advertising software that's supposed to give you free satelite TV on your PC. The program costs $40, but they claim it lets you watch hundreds of live worldwide channels free of charge. Sounds too good to be true... is this a scam?"

Get I Really Get Free Satellite TV on my PC?
Everything I've read about this type of thing tells me it's a scam, or at least a waste of money. The software you get for your forty bucks is nothing more than a menu of free online television broadcasts. Most of the stations listed are foreign, and the list contains many entries that are obsolete or do not work.

Sorry, but there's no way to turn your PC into a satellite dish and get free HBO. But there is some good news... You CAN use your internet-connected computer to tune into a huge number of free television broadcasts. You can watch the BBC News, Comedy Central, Discovery Channel, ESPN, and other broadcasts from around the world.

I suggest that you first go to the official website of the TV station or broadcast that you'd like to watch and look for a link to view live or recent broadcasts. If you don't see what you want there, try one of these sites:
