July 4th: Whatever Happened to Boomboxes at the Beach?

July 3, 2006

Thinking about July 4th and how the holiday (at least for me) brings of thoughts of fireworks, BBQs and the beach ...

Now, with all of the noise about MP3 players and iPods and personal music players, whatever happened to beaches filled with boomboxes on July 4th?

Yes, they are loud, often play music we don't want to hear, but they do foster a sense of community when you're at the beach with friends.

Are there still "No Radio Playing" signs at your local beach?

  1. Martyn Davies :

I just returned from the beach at the weekend. I don't think I would have been able to hear a boombox, with all the noise coming from jetskis and speedboats racing about close to the shore....

  1. Hoodia :

I don't remember seeing any signs about no radio playing, but I don't see any boom boxes anymore, either. Everyone has headphones and listens to their own thing.

Ya Tom, those are gone for ever. In a way it is a bliss that the nuisance created by those boomboxes are gone and you can truly relax, be pensive, enjoy your solitude by the sea.

The absence of boomboxes in beaches may make you miss those retro days and Boney M, but then we must understand that with the passage of time, culture too changes.

Those were the days and these are the days :-)

Those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer ...
