Apparently not much -- counter to the claims of the recording industry.
Check out this report entitled "The Effect of File Sharing on Record Sales: An Empirical Analysis," about a recent study that noted that illegal music downloads (you know who are are!) have less than a 1% affect on the sale of CDs.
In fact, there was a relationship between high downloads and high CD sales -- of course, depending on the artist.
All this goes to show that we still want our music -- whatever it may be -- and are willing to pay -- or not pay -- for it.
Just wish the recording industy would stop "crying wolf" all of the time about how bad things are ... ![]()

Maybe the music industry should spend more time looking for actual bands and less time looking for the next Britney Spears(no talent-looks good). The Grammys ended for me after the Police stopped playing. Sorry but I have no interest in seeing Justin Timberlake, Shakira (well maybe with the mute button on), or anyone that come from American Idol... How about having a couple of actual rock bands perform?
Speaking of the Police, it might help cd sales if concert ticket prices were less than a months pay for some teens. Take for instance the upcomming Police tour. If you want good seats and are lucky enough to get through on Ticketmaster, they will only cost you $254 per seat. Oh yeah, that does not include the extra $100 you will have to pay to join the Police fan club in order to be able to get tickets tomorrow. So when all is said in done, you could buy 20 cd's for the cost of one ticket to see Sting and company...
So much for thanking your fans...
Do you realize the clothes people where to the Grammy Awards are freebees. Most artist mention the designers name on the red carpet. They are free becuase the are basically bill boards. Hell if you were a writer or a painter would you sit back while someone scanned your art and plaster it on the internet giving it away freely, or for that matter making copies and selling them for 5 bucks a peice. People it is the same thing!
I am tired of people sitting around going around talking shit about this. Granted CEOs are money hungry. but do you realize the artist only gets a certain percent, and when 95% of downloads are illegal... geuss who you are basically slapping in the face. The artist you are such a big "fan" of.
