Vince Flynn Predicts Tea Party Back in 1997?

Vince Flynn: Term Limits I just started listening to Vince Flynn's Term Limits (audiobook), (hardcover published in 1997), and I found it uncanny how what is happening in this book reminds me of our current debt debacle and the rise of the Tea Party. In Term Limits, retired American special forces kill a few Senators and Congressmen, who they feel is spending too much on pork barrel projects, adding to our national debt and not doing anything about cutting spending, which is leading to the destruction of our country.

Of course, today, Tea Party activists aren't assassinating Congressmen or Senators for their inability to tackle debt, but they are certainly very vocal about their opposition to out of control government spending and many are opposed to raising the national debt ceiling. Certainly, the Left has has tried to paint the Tea Party as violent and anti-government, but so far tea party protests have been peaceful and opposition to big government spending has been spirited but civil.

Mitch Rapp, the main character of every other Vince Flynn novel isn't in this book, but other familiar characters are. Earlier in the book, the President's helicopter entourage is painted by several surface to air missiles on the way to Camp David. The missiles aren't launched, but merely a warning to the President. Certainly, a heart-thumping, adrenaline-inducing part of the book and I'm only in the third chapter of the audiobook. Now check out these prescient paragraphs below and tell me it doesn't make you think of our feisty debt ceiling debate today. Vince Flynn basically predicted the rise of the Tea Party 13 years in advance. Of course, the "tea party" people in his fiction book include professional assassins and have access to surface-to-air missiles and other cool weapons... but it is fiction after all. smiley-machine-gun-fire
In 1776 the founders of the United States of America sent a Declaration of Independence to the King of England. In that Declaration Thomas Jefferson wrote whenever a form of government becomes destructive, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it and to institute new government. We are invoking this right to rise up and alter the course of our government. You have had the chance to change America's course & you have failed. Sen. Fitzgerald. Congressman Koslowski & Sen Downs were killed as a warning to the President and the remaining members of the House & Senate. Your days of deficit spending and partisan politics are over. You have had the time and the opportunity to bring spending under control & you have done nothing. The time to act is now.

We are directing the President to withdraw his budget and construct a balanced budget. This budget will contain now new or raise taxes and will cut all unneeded federal programs. [snip] The President, the House, & the Senate shall pass a 2% national sales tax to be used solely for the reduction of the the national debt. We will be watching your actions closely. This the only warning we will give. If you do not respond to these demands you will be killed. None of you are out of our reach. Not even the President.

Reading these paragraphs makes me want to "root" for these "terrorists" who are attempting to force the President to balance his budget and bring down the national debt through any means necessary, including assassinations of political leaders who won't cut spending and reduce the debt. But are they "terrorists" or are they "patriots" trying to save the country? Like I said, I'm only in the third chapter, so hard to say, but it's got me hooked. smiley-smile If interested, you can get the audiobook here, or if you prefer to read, here's the paperback.

Update - 2 minutes after post
Wait! It's official! Tea Party people are "terrorists" according to today's Politico article"It has become commonplace to call the tea party faction in the House “hostage takers.” But they have now become full-blown terrorists. They have joined the villains of American history who have been sufficiently craven to inflict massive harm on innocent victims to achieve their political goals. A strong America has always stood firm in the face of terrorism. That tradition is in jeopardy, as Congress and President Barack careen toward an uncertain outcome in the tea party- manufactured debt crisis.

So as long as the tea party has been officially classified as terrorists, they may as well go all-in and start taking out idiotic legislators that don't solve our debt crisis. I jest of course...
