IPEVO Skype phone

IPEVO, a Silicon Valley-based subsidiary of PChome Online specializing in affordable Skype-enabled devices has launched a new USB-based Skype phone called the Free-1. The Free-1 USB phone only costs $29.99 so they aren't kidding when they say that they offer "affordable Skype" solutions. They even have $15.99 models on their website.

PChome Online actually launched the first co-branded website with Skype in July 2004 in Taiwan which they claim helped make Taiwan one of the most successful markets for Skype, and now they are going after the U.S. market through IPEVO.

Here are the specs straight from IPEVO's site:

  • Superior sound quality (16KHz sampling rate).
  • User programmable buttons enhances customization.
  • Smart and stylish design. Small form factor and lightweight.
  • 10 selectable ring tones (include silent).
  • USB Plug-and-Play technology.
  • PC sound card not required.
  • Independent use of phone and sound card allows for Skype call while listening to music on PC.
  • LED indicates USB connection state plus off-hook condition.
  • Acoustically isolated speaker and microphone to eliminate echo.
  • Built-in volume control & mute button

I bought IPEVO Free.1 phones and it worked well with my windows XP laptop and integrates well with Skype (and latest Skype 2.x beta also). This is small, sleek and stylish so I liked that.

However if you are looking other than Skype (such as Xten/Xlite(SIP softphone), net2phone etc. then this device won't work well. You can still use as a USB speaker/microphone device. i.e setup these softphones to use USB audio device and then use IPEVO phone just like headset, but that's it. You can can not control anything other than Skype here. IPEVO seems to have no plans to extend support to other software also. This is the ony drawback I found here. In future I would rather buy some more generic here such as http://echostore.com/skype-phone-usb-mobile.html that support wide range of soft clients. So that I can use XLite with my VoIP PBX solution (asterisk@Home).

I purchased their p1k( http://www.echostore.com/skype-phone-mobile.html ) skype phone, it works with voipstunt now(and it works with MAC and linux, but I do not use MAC), Fantastic!!! I got their adaptor too.
