I was scrolling through my Facebook Newsfeed on my iPhone when I saw this:
Apparently, I might like "Shamrock Entertainment" located over a hundred miles away in Lynn, Massachusetts. Really Facebook? You think I like adult entertainers, strippers, and exotic dancers? Hey I like women just as much as the next guy, but what in my Facebook "Like" history makes you think I'm partial to visiting strip clubs? Tell me, because I'd really like to know. Heck, my wife might like to know too. Thanks a lot Facebook, now I have to explain the 32 one dollar bills in my wallet to my spouse!
Here's a PG-13 rated picture of their Facebook page. I clipped it before it reached NC-17:
I'm no prude, but I certainly didn't expect a strip club to be offered up as "Pages You Might Like".
It makes me wonder now that Facebook is a public company with a failed IPO if they are trying to monetize any way they can. Perhaps Shamrock Entertainment "paid" for this placement. It's possible Shamrock Entertainment found some way to "game" the system to gain an advantage. Maybe they "liked" the same things I did like Van Halen, Journey, Rocky, Terminator, Back to the Future, etc. I'm Irish with an Irish last name so perhaps that had something to do with it.
Porn is a hot seller for sure, but my Facebook usage is for sharing technology news, sharing family photos, and some political opinions. My Facebook usage has been immune from porn-related stuff until today. I guess I shouldn't be shocked that my pristine Facebook world has now been tainted (blessed?) with beautiful, nearly naked women. Of course, now I'll have to be extra careful when showing my kids some Facebook photos or videos of the family.
