Unless you have been hiding under a rock, you have probably heard about Firefox. No, this is not a plug for the 1982 Firefox movie starring Clint Eastwood.

Speaking of Clint Eastwood, if I may sidetrack for a moment; I read recently in a Forbes article titled "How Clint Eastwood Rouses Guys' Love Hormone" that watching a Clint Eastwood movie can actually raise your testosterone levels. (Bridges of Madison County excluded) Don't believe me? Check out the news link.

The Firefox I am referring to is the Firefox browser. It seems hotter than Britney Spears, Paris Hilton or whoever the hottest pop idol is these days. I bet it's currently returning as many Google hits as either of these two popular people. I haven't tried Firefox myself yet, but i did check out it's features. It supports tabbed browsing, a built-in pop-up blocker, and more. Personally, I don't see the big deal. I use the free Avant Browser which uses the Internet Explorer engine but adds tabbed browsing, pop-up blocking, Flash blocking, ad blocking, and more.

I guess any browser that is fast and not Microsoft (the anti-MS to be cool craze) and works on multiple operating systems causes lots of hype. Maybe someone can comment on why Firefox has received so much hype. For now I'm sticking with Avant Browser. Check out one of the developer's blogs here:

Well, first of all, it ain't Microsoft. It does not depend on the IE engine like Firefox, so it will not have the security problems that plague IE.

The browser is multi-platform and has a plug-in architecture so that other developers can add features. For instance, you can have more enhanced tabbing features (real tabs, not multi-windows like Avant), blogging tools, bookmark tools, navigation aids, ad-blockers, developer tool-bar (GREAT for developers), TinyURL plug-in, etc. See http://tinyurl.com/yrqx6 for a complete, growing list.

My guess is that it is currently more popular amongst developers like me, who find the plug-in features are rich, and allow us to develop to W3C web-standards with better debugging information than IE. I was at a web developer conference recently, and most of the developers were demonstrating their stuff on Firefox, rather than IE. Some were even using Macs instead of Windows platforms.

Ahh. See i knew there had to be more to Firefox than just being "anti-Microsoft". After all, there are other free browsers out there besides Firefox.

These plug-ins seem pretty cool, especially the pop-up blocker and RSS reader.

>>real tabs, not multi-windows like Avant

You imply the tabbed browing is "true tabbed browsing" whereas Avant is not true tabbed-browsing. Does this mean that say 10 tabbed windows in Firefox will use less memory than 10 tabbed windows in Avant? If so, I definitely need to check out Firefox, since I typically have 10 or more windows open.

I guess I will have to go download Firefox and try it. Just when I was getting used to Avant Browser too...

Lets see if I can do this without getting longwinded:
I am a budding computer nut/ web designer. As a casual end user I find Firefox and mozilla browsers in general can't be beat. The plug in architecture allows for a feature rich yet at the same time lean mean machine. I only have a few extensions intstalled, so my browser is not carrying a lot of superfluous weight around. The extensions I use (every day, every session in fact) are the "css edit" side bar and the "web dev." tool bar. These two extensions are simply not available on any other browsers, and are quite a boon to any developer.
But important to the point of (in my oppinion) completly over shadowing the standard features of tabbed browsing etc etc. Sure other browsers have tabbed browesing, but none offer the ability to look at a sites stylesheet, or change display resolution in the browser without changing your entire monitors settings, all with a simple click of a button.
Granted, It's kewl to "talk stink" about Microsoft and intetnet explorer and yes I am of that camp. However this attitude developed along with my web coding skills. I am new to the web and web development, yet I am allready disgusted with internet explorers lack of ability. It boils down to: It is not so much that firefox is simply the best browser (and free, no adds and constantly being improved). It is so frustrating to develop a page layout and almost invariably, mozilla, opera, and Netscape browsers will render quite similar while internet explorer just gives problems after problems. In turn I have spent literally hundreds of hours this past year trying to "baby sit" and drag IE along for the ride. Inievitably having to comprimise my detailing, or even have to scrap altogether a complete layout.
It is obvious that the problems are directly related to IE's lack of copmliance to "standards".
If I, an amatuer web developer has lost hundreds of hrs to IE's ineptitude, what has IE cost the industry world wide in just this past year? It must easily be billions of dollars!!!
Ok now couple this with the attitude of the mozilla development team, as compared to microsofts IE development. Mozilla support has a fresh, caring and enthusiatic attitude, as opposed to well>>> dont get me going about microsofts, attitude towards the enduser and developer!
If you were not aware then read about microsofts (once again) underhanded buissness tactics with regard to recent patent award for xml and their apparent desire to monopolize the mark up languages further with their CSS patent . And once again we are being told by microsofts reps. that this is not going to be used for "profiteering"! Why do I not buy the concept of microsoft spending big bucks to get these patents, yet they are going to just sit on them?
I feel that buissnesses should profit from their own hard work, and subsequent beneficial developments, not from plagaristic, monoplositc feet dragging.
If the web is the realised future of the world of communications, then simply put, I will continue to not just use, and enjoy the benefits of standards compliant browsers, but full on evangalize the benefits to the individual endusers, and the www community at large.
I am proud to say, with regard to my use of mozilla browsers and the future of the web at large>>>
I am part of a solution and not a cog in perpetuating a backwards development problem !
