PowerDsine Extender Delivers Whopping 25.5 Watts Over 200-meter Ethernet Cabling

I had a conference call with Microsemi's Daniel Feldman, Director of Marketing while he was in a noisy airport. It made it difficult to understand the new product he was describing, so we planned to reschedule, but it never happened. Nevertheless, I wanted to share the interesting Microsemi news, since they are one of the leaders in the Power over Ethernet (PoE) space. As more and more network devices leverage PoE requiring more power, keep your eye on Microsemi to be on the forefront of PoE midspans and extenders to feed your power hungry LAN devices. Their latest offering, the Microsemi single-port PowerDsine PD-PoE Extender doubles the reach of PoE midspans to 200 meters. The new device will enable enterprise IT managers to easily install Ethernet end points, such as wireless LAN access points and IP cameras, at distances greater than the 100m allowed while still supporting 10/100/1000Mbps data rates.

Microsemi Doubles Reach for Power-over-Ethernet Midspans

PowerDsine Extender Is First to Deliver 25.5 Watts Over 200-meter Ethernet Cabling with Full 10/100/1000 Mbps Support

Microsemi Corporation (Nasdaq:MSCC), a leading manufacturer of high performance analog/mixed signal integrated circuits, high reliability semiconductors and RF subsystems, today announced a single-port PoE extender that doubles the powering reach of its PoE midspans to 200 meters. It is the first to deliver 25.5-watt, IEEE802.3at power levels over extended distances while supporting 10/100/1000Mbps data rates. Even longer reach is possible by cascading multiple extenders.

"Microsemi's PowerDsine PD-PoE Extender provides a cost-effective way to extend the Ethernet network range beyond 100m for both standard power devices as well as high power, IEEE802.3at-2009 devices such as Pan-Tilt-Zoom network cameras and IEEE802.11n WLAN access points," said Sani Ronen, senior product marketing manager, Microsemi PowerDsine Midspans. "Our new PoE extender enables both data and power to be delivered up to a distance of 200m while complying with relevant standards. Other products can only deliver 15.4 watts over these distances for standard-power, IEEE802.3af applications."

Microsemi's PowerDsine PD-PoE Extender does not require local power, and is simply connected to a midspan and powered via the PoE input. The extender joins Microsemi's growing family of midspan products that support up to 24-port implementations in both standard- and high-power applications with a variety of smart power management and remote maintenance capabilities. The company's midspans enable both data and power to be delivered over a single standard RJ-45 cable, eliminating the need for external power supplies and their associated AC/DC power cabling, while providing affordable, safe and reliable power over existing Ethernet infrastructures.

- Extended PoE installation range by an additional 100m
- Supports 10/100/1000Mbps data rates
- Provides 802.3af power levels when powered by any 802.3at source
