TomTom unveiled a "buddy list" GPS tracking system. Too bad it doesn't encorporate my P2P GPS traffic monitoring idea, which uses a peer-to-peer network of GPS users to track traffic patterns and alert you if there is traffic jam and automatically re-route. This TomTom GPS news simply says you can track other users, IM each other, exchange POIs. In any event, check out the news from Stuff:
TomTom’s just unveiled a bunch of new and updated features for its iconic GO sat-navs, including an intriguing friend-tracking mode.
Called TomTom Buddies, the feature lets you track your mates wherever you go – and in return, they get to track you too.
All you do is invite other TomTom users – you’ll have to shun your Garmin and Navman chums - to be your authorised ‘buddy’. The idea is that the Buddies service will be like an exclusive club through which you can send each other text messages and locations you think are interesting.
If you feel like being a loner for a bit you can select the privacy option which lets you hide your location.

those Tom Tom commercials are the best. I noticed more garmin commercial on tv as well. must be related to the success of the tom tom ads
Recently purchased a TomTom Go 700. Found that it had an out of date map after it arrived. Went to TomTom web site to get an updated map and found they would charge me another $100 for the new map. I found that to be unacceptable because I felt I should have gotten the unit with the updated map in the first place. The CSR at TomTom said it was not their problem and that they could not control how long a unit has been on the shelf before it is sold. So it is my fault that I bought the unit. I certainly would not recommend anyone buying a TomTom.
Pray very hard that you do not have any technical difficulties with your TomTom. My GO510 started to freeze on the opening screen. There techs tried to help me by having me download the latest software. They were MOST helpful.
In the end I had to send my unit it for repairs and that is when the nightmare started. They cannot tell me if they received the unit, the RMA number they gave me to put on the package that I returned the unit in CANNOT be accessed by anyone in customer service.
At this point I don't know if my unit is in Concord, MA, the repair shop even though I have proof that it was delivered. No one, and I mean NO ONE can confirm that my unit is actually in the hands of Tom Tom.
Great news for something I paid $599.00 for.

I thought I might share my concerns about a recently bought Tom Tom XL-S that apears to be malfunctioning and expect to receive some friendly user's advice.
My GPS only works fine after some time on. At the beginning it goes crazy, switching from the directions screen to the menu; it won't allow you to enter an address properly, an M, or various M will appear on the screen, withoout allowing you to write properly . It will switch to sound and mute without touching anything, and only after some time running with your car will you be allowed to enter the proper directions ant it will work flawlessly afterwards. If the car is stopped for a couple of hours and the GPS is switched off and then restarted, it will work seamlessly without fault. On the contrary, if the GPS is switched off for the night, you will need to go through the same painful process the morning after to get your GS working properly.
Has anyone experienced the same with a TOM TOM? Any advice?.
Many thanks.
Ive used GPS units (bigtime) being a truck driver. 1st problem they do not support us, or anyone else (ie.taxi ect.) low bridges you will drive right into them. Garmin is the only product on the market that does. Its not perfect but at least it try's PC miler is a product that has us in mind, but its a PC based software (thats not convenient holding a laptop and driving a big rig) Tom Tom
is ok if your in a car. You can forget it if you want to use it for work. Can I say toy..lol
