Someone forwarded me a tip about a company called damaka.
Here's a quote from their site:
"damaka launches world's first freely downloadable SIP-based innovative Peer-to-Peer Personal SoftSwitch (February 7, 2005)"
Hmmm, first SIP-based P2P client? I'll have to look into this further, but the VoIP softphone client space just got more crowded!

Joost needed a boost. Still don't think it will succeed. Give me a P2P app that can play any live TV channel and any movie for a set price. I heard about them too. I downloaded the client. Looks very neat. They have some really cool features lacking in other similar products - like Caller ID, Call waiting, call hold and other nice features. They dont offer calls to PSTN/cell phone - It'll be interesting to know their future plans and strategy.....
It's a closed system, so don't even bother downloading it. You won't be able to use it with any of your SIP accounts.
Compare with SightSpeed, another closed client.
Why won't these folks wake up and provide their clients as standards compliant and open? I just bought eyeBeam from Xten, and I'm happy to shell out serious dough for a _useful_ SIP application (though the UI is shite).
The fact that damaka is standards based makes them easier to link to other SIP providers. I'd think that'd be a natural progression for these guys.
I was also very impressed by their SoftSwitch features - 2 phone lines, call wait, call hold and music on hold. I don't think any other product out there provides these features.
I tried it with my friends in US and Europe and found the voice call quality to be excellent. IM worked like a charm too....
Let's watch their progress and give them a chance at least.... someone is standing up against proprietory stuff... someone is caring about security... someone is caring about customer finally!!!!
I just download the client, and look for the feature.I think it's very like same as Teltel.
I don't know what's the different from other P2P free software(SJphone,Xten,Teltel..etc)
The ineen client supports open standards and allows calls to be made across sip networks. Finally, there is a free VoIP solution which is truly "open".
Chris,
damaka has way more features than TelTel. damaka provides an innovative P2P SIP-based end-to-end solution with softswitching capabilities. It offers a lot of interesting features (much more than I have seen in any other SIP client) - check out their features @ http://www.damaka.com/features.htm
Reasons I use damaka:
1) simple to use
2) great audio quality (backed by GIPS)
3) secure end-to-end / p2p
4) free voicemail
5) great IM features (text-2-speach, spell-check)
6) Connects to other SIP networks (I can connect to my friends on FWD)
7) It doesn't use my computer resources like skype does...
Check out what Zennstorm said about the use of computer resources... (Quoted from Silicon.com: http://networks.silicon.com/telecoms/0,39024659,39150627,00.htm)
Start Quote...
"At one point, Zennström affirmed claims that Skype software uses some of the computing resources and available bandwidth on a connected PC to create super groupings of network identities or nodes without user permission. "
I feel more secure with damaka than with skype; check their privacy policy @ http://www.damaka.com/privacy.htm

"much disturbance I feel in the force..."
Come on guys, SIP is P2P by nature. If you are going to call it P2P SIP then it will need to use the right SIP extensions: http://www.p2psip.org
I found the client in the Internet and downloaded it.
I have captured the communication (call, Instant Messaging...) of the Damaca Softswitch from PC-A to PC-B on the basis of Ethereal/Paketyser but i found no trace of SIP-Protocol.
Is this Client realy a SIP based Peer-to-Peer Client?
This Client is NOT a P2P VOIP but not realy with SIP.
Andreas, when you make a statement you should learn to support them too.
On what basis are you making this statement? Can you explain what you mean by your statement.
* sippedoutyoda *
I downloaded it and it worked - until I took my PC to back to work and the firewall began blocking communications.
Anyone know what commands I can use to allow Damaka to work through our PIX firewall? From what I have gathered, we have to allow solicited UDP to port 5060. Not sure if this is correct though. Skype worked immediately with not issues. That is why it is king of the market IMO. I have tried Live Communicator and Damaka. Both involved researching to get setup.
I really want to use Damaka but with the firewall issue it looks discouraging.
sippedoutyoda,
of course i support my statement and with arguments. It s enough wenn you capture the communication with Ethereal then you can see that damaka supportet not SIP(Session initiation Protocol). No trace of SIP.
I hope, you answer me.
