In my recent post on a free 411 directory assistance service I stated that in theory you could use SkypeOut to dial 800-FREE411 and then have 800-FREE411 connect your call free of charge, but you'd still use up your SkypeOut minutes. I wrote:

Too bad Skype doesn't charge less per minute for (toll free) 800 numbers - if they did then you could save money by always dialing though Free411.com's service. Of course, that wouldn't be very nice to Free411.com since they pay for the call. (when you dial their 800 number and they connect the call)

I thought about checking Skype's website to see if they did indeed discount 800 numbers, but I was too busy to check and I figured one of my blog readers would "catch me" if I was wrong. Well, Rick Hultz, a prolific commenter on my blog, did just that. He points out that Skype DOES offer discounted 800 number dialing. In fact, nevermind "discounted", Skype offers FREE toll-free number dialing for France, Poland, the UK, and the U.S.

So if you want to make FREE SkypeOut calls to any toll-free number in the U.S., simply dial 800-FREE411 (800-373-3411) from your Skype client and then tell the speech recognition directory assistance the city/town of the person/business you are trying to reach and then it will connect the call for you - FREE of charge! I just tested it from my Skype client and it works - I still have the same number of SkypeOut minutes. Of course this hack only works if the person you are dialing is in the directory (not unpublished number). And it isn't very nice to make Free411.com to pay for terminating your call, but hey they are ad supported (you have to listen to an ad before the call is connected), so maybe they don't mind?

Well, here's one way to save your precious SkypeOut minutes! B)

True, it isn't a "hack" in the truest sense of the word. It's more of a workaround or trick.

But no need to get in a huff. Lots of people use the word "hack" in ways that are different than its original definition.

I haven't had a chance to try this out yet, but have some thoughts from a business ethics standpoint are that it's neutral. Skype doesn't get the LD fee for the call, but they likely get some fee for the origination of an 800 call. Free411 gets the cost of the final call, but they get to play a 5 to 10 second ad to the caller before making the connection. I assume that they desire to have as many such calls as possible. I assume that the loser is the caller who needs to call directory assistance (not always possible if calling a mobile or unlisted number), wait for a response, listen to an ad, and wait for a response. I assume that Free411 uses a VoIP service so chances are that combining that with Skype may result an an other worldly delay. I suppose that's worth saving $.99 to $2.50 for normall 411, but not worth if for replacing a regular call.

I am trying, like so many others of my country men to figure out if Skype Out WORKS, or NOT.
I don't need to call the directory assistant for a 411 number!!
I have used Skype computer to computer from California to England and it worked like a breeze. NO problems.
Now I would like to use Skype computer (mine) to someone's land line. I just want to know if this system has been worked out yet, or are we just hummin and hawin about it.

I guess my problem with this is... and anyone who knows how FREE411 works is that it really SCREWS them. Basically when you use the service to connect to someone they log the number... then later a rep at FREE411 calls the person you called to see if they are interested in the service. So by doing this you make it so reps are calling people who might not even be close to interested in the service making calls and wasting time which equals money.

In response to all of your questions there is another option. Use the 800 number on the back of a calling card that you buy at your local dollar store.. download "stana phone" at https://www.stanaphone.com/
They do support 800 numbers. but don't kick a lot of dust up about it. otherwise the'll get wind about it as well and stop it fast and in a hurry... damn, this hack STILL works (for me anyway) I tried calling a friend in the U.S (even though I'm in New Zealand) and it worked without a hitch, can't see why everyone else is havin' trouble with it, guess they didn't type the number in right, I'm still amazed that Skype haven't closed the loophole yet..

I'm having problems with skype when operating with windows ME. The program freezes my pc on statup. I havt to do a safe mode just to diactivate skype's operation. I'd just install it to my other PC just to use it. Very clear voip and with it's vast users, you may be able to contact a lot more

- I totally agree..I am not really a 'techie' but I am using skype for business purposes. My problem is - a lot of strangers call me. They sound like Indians, and they are totally rude. I don't how to block these unknown callers. So what I do is to sign out from skype and just stick with Yahoo Messenger instead.

Talking plain text, I am interested in various calling card devices (not such as VoIP) but things for the cards where you need to nicely scratch to view the PIN of a calling card. NOW - and that is my main concern, I love to talk to many people through telephone. Concerning the amount of money "wasted" through talking to both national and "international" friends, I am looking forward to find a good way to cut back on the waste (please keep in mind: sadly I not a lucky owner of a mobile phone)...

Let´s pretend I had a bunch of (prepaid) calling cards from the same phone company...is there a possibilty to find out how the 10 to 12 digit PIN is made up (eg. A+B : C + A - D = E)? Analyzing numbers for a specific algorithm...I´m not sure if this might be the right way to go. Sounds stupid though, but this is only something to get warmed up.... well, I´m not sure if this is good enough, but if there are any generators around (or links to something concerning my "problems") please either send them to me or post them here. If you think I am a "criminal", no...of course not (I only want to broaden my point of view)...on the other side...

Anyway - I´ll help you guys as good as I can, I like to trade.

1) Yes, you can make free SkypeOut calls, but this blog post was before that promo went out

2) Like you said, the free promo is until end of this year - only 2 months left, so this trick could be used afterwards. Of course, last I tried this trick, the free411 only gave you up to like 3 minutes. Enough to order a pizza anyway. :) Though you should be able to make a free local call you cheap bastard!

Free411 does not connect you to the number you requested, it only gives you the number. It does allow you to connect to the business whose ad has been played to you. See Free411.

Though the advertiser has to pay a few dollars for that call. So while you save a few pennies, the advertiser has to pay a few dollars....

It used to connect you with a 3 minute limit before disconnecting you. I guess they got tired of paying the termination fees.

It still connects you but only to the advertisers, I guess to push the number of charged calls to advertisers.

So if you call for a pizza I am sure Domino's has an ad on there and you can still connect to them for free as advertiser ;)
