Global Dialer - Cheap Minutes App - is Gone

June 29, 2010

A reader to my blog tipped me off to Global Dialer going out of business. They had a proprietary software application that you download directly onto your mobile phone that enabled you to make low-cost, 'one-click' international calls. The screenshot of their calling rates is from 2006 when I first wrote about them. Rates listed here have certainly come down since then.

According to Whois, the registration for the website was created in 2001 and expires in October 2010.

Grandstream GXV3140 Dual Stack Skype & SIP Phone

June 22, 2010

Last year I predicted a dual stack 'Skype' & 'SIP' phone was coming soon. That day has arrived with Grandstream's GXV3140 IP Multimedia Phone, which already supported SIP, but now adds Skype support in their latest firmware. The GXV3140 is the world's first multimedia dual stack Skype and SIP phone. It supports Skype voice/video calls in addition to making SIP-based voice/video calls.

SkypeKit SDK adds Skype to Just About Anything

June 22, 2010

Skype today announced that soon every Internet connected device can now become a Skype endpoint with the addition of the SkypeKit SDK. The Panasonic line of TVs that integrated Skype used an early version of SkypeKit (as well as LG and Samsung TVs). Other connected devices like wireless picture frames could soon be Skype-enabled. The SDK will leverage Skype's wideband SILK codec.

Microsoft Kinect Adds Video Chat

June 14, 2010

Project Natal for the XBOX 360 has just been renamed to Microsoft Kinect. Personally, I prefer the old name. In any event, Microsoft also announced a VoIP & video conferencing app simply called Video Chat. Great, get rid of a cool project name and then offer the lamest name for a video chat application ever! Offering a video app is a natural extension for this video camera device.

With this news of bringing videoconferencing to your TV, it would appear Microsoft isn't going to take Skype trying to take over the living room TV lying down.

Grandstream Lands First and Only IP-PBX on Skype Store

June 3, 2010

Apparently, Grandstream landed a lucrative and exclusive spot on the Skype Store. Sorry Avaya, Cisco, Digium, Fonality, etc.

Specifically, the Skype Store lists the Grandstream GXE5028 IP PBX. I reviewed another model in the series called the GXE5024 which you can check out here.

Goodbye Skype Business Control Panel Hello Skype Manager!

May 19, 2010

Skype today announced the launch of Skype Manager, a web-based management tool that replaces Skype Business Control Panel (BCP). I noticed the GUI has been slightly revamped, but essentially it's the same admin panel as BCP. It does have a new Dashboard feature and shows your monthly allocations as a graph. Of course, just like BCP, Skype Manager can also be used to set up and manage Skype for SIP , which lets you connect a SIP-enabled PBX to Skype.

Panasonic Activates Skype on Viera 2010 HDTVs

May 18, 2010

Panasonic has promised a Skype upgrade for their 2010 line of HDTVs. Well, today at 10:30 a.m. they activated Skype on your 2010 Panasonic VIERA CAST enabled HDTVs. So if you're one of the lucky few, fire up that bad boy and make some Skype calls!

They also announced the availability of Panasonic's Skype-enabled communication camera (TY-CC10W). In addition, today Panasonic released a cool ad / commercial featuring grandpa calling his family and using the TV remote as a phone. Hilarity ensures...

Google Buys Global IP Sound

May 18, 2010

Google has an offer to buy Global IP Solutions, for $68.2 million. Global IP Solutions (GIPS) was the company that powered Skype's adaptive codec to handle packet loss, jitter, etc. until Skype decided to develop their own codec. Google Talk uses GIPS, so certainly Google will save on the licensing fees if they pick up GIPS.

Skype Group Video Arrives!

May 13, 2010

Today, Skype released a beta of their new software which enables group video for up to 5 video participants. This was a key feature missing by Skype that for years Skype fans (including myself) have complained about. Of course, Sightspeed, now part of Logitech has had multi-party video for a long time.

Here's the kicker though from Skype's blog:
Group video calling is just one in a set of new premium features you'll see us roll out during 2010. We haven't set prices for these premium features yet, but rest assured that we're still absolutely committed to bringing you free voice and two-way video calling.
I bolded the relevant portions.

FREETALK Everyman HD Webcam for Skype Available

April 26, 2010

The FREETALK Everyman HD Webcam (TALK-7140), is available for pre-orders in the Skype Shop, however, I am told that starting tomorrow they will be fully available for purchase. It features a low $49 price, and it sports resolutions up to 1280 x 720 (22.5fps), as well as smaller resolutions like 640x480 (30fps), 320x240 and 160x120. It uses 15fps for low light conditions. Skype automatically uses lower resolutions in case of degraded network or when low-performance hardware is used on either end of the video call.
