Many foreign countries still ban VoIP which has caused many blackmarket/underground VoIP providers to "flaunt" the rules.
Well, thanks to changes made to the Telecommunications Act, the legalization of voice-over IP in South Africa will finally happen effective February 1st 2005.
"Hey, South Africa - Welcome to the VoIP Revolution, man!"

I am currently in the Philippines where there is talk of making it law that only telecommunication providers may supply VOIP services.
The operators are pushing it even further, by limiting the user to use their server and their software.
Personally I think that it would be unconstitutional, but I guess in the Philippines government can be bribed to pass any law.
Is this the same in SA now or will people be allowed to use any client?

Hey all you voip gurus. I know that voip is revolutionary and all, but what does business have to gain from voip and will voip ever compete with 3G?
3G doesn't necessarily compete with VoIP. VoIP can be carried over 3G. If you ever get an unlimited data plan, essentially you can have free phone calls over your 3G cell phone.
Also 3G is wireless. As popular as cellphones are, landlines aren't going away just yet. So VoIP will continue to replace landlines and be complimentary in all the wireless arenas - 3G, WiMAX, WiFi, etc.
Plse send me all relevent developments wrt VOIP and industry growth

VoIP in South Africa is definately alive and kicking , especially with Cellphone 3G Voip services like
iCTel Cellphone VoIP and iCTel Callback Service.
South Africa also has one of the most active mobile phone internet usage and thus even the pre-pay data rates are really cheap compared to England and Europe.
A interresting trend is companies (like iCTel sharing their profits in a affiliate type scheme with the users.
I can imagine seeing this type of reward for viral marketing happening more often as the VoIP companies try to compete.
