I admit it, I'm a Smallville fan. I guess that's better than admitting to being a Jerry Springer fan, right? Actually, Smallville, which seems targetted at a teenage audience actually draws a considerable adult audience as well, so I shouldn't be ashamed to admit I'm a Smallville fan.

In any event, I was watching Smallville last night and saw the "Get Lex" Verizon Smallville Sweepstakes. Basically, the Verizon/Smallville sweepstakes rules are as follows:

Smallville's
secrets can soon be yours!

Watch Wednesday, February 23rd, 8/7c and tell us Lex's email password for your chance to win a walk-on role in the Smallville 2005 season premiere!

Verizon Wireless customers, you can break into Lex Luthor's email account!

On Wednesday, February 23, 8/7c watch the Smallville episode, "Sacred" to get Lex's password. Then send the password as a text message to the shortcode 438539 ("GET LEX") from your Verizon Wireless mobile phone.

You'll be logged in to receive Lex's emails directly to your Verizon Wireless phone. You will also be automatically entered for a chance to win a walk-on role in the Smallville 2005 season premiere!

When you're connected to Verizon Wireless you're always tapped in!

I have to say, this is a very interesting new way of building customer loyalty. Of course, I'm not that much of a Smallville fan to switch from my Sprint cellphone to Verizon just to play this sweepstakes, but I'm sure there are some teenager Smallville fanatics that might. Actually, this is just the first gauntlet thrown down by Verizon - if this sweepstakes is successful and Verizon does it again with other popular TV shows and the other cell phone companies don't follow, then it may give Verizon the "cool" and "hip" edge to help get the valuable teenage demographic.

Who won the get lex sweepstakes?

Posted by: Geraldo Ortiz at March 19, 2005 11:59 AM

I was wondering if anyone caught the smallville last night 3/23/05. The episode was a re-run but it was the first time I seen it. It's the episode where Lex's plant leaks a bacteria that makes people see there worse nightmare's.

Lex's worse nightmare starts by the camera focusing on the United States symbol and than cuts to Lex. Did anyone see the irony of Lex being the president of the united states sending nuclear weapons across the globe and smiling. Then he proceeds to walk over the bones of the dead. Was the WB sending a subtle message about our president/government. That was the first thing I thought of when I seen it.

Just a thought?

Posted by: Small opinion at March 24, 2005 11:23 AM

Regarding Lex's vision of being the President and sending nuclear missles across the globe, I did not see that as an indictment of our current President. You're reading way too much into that.

Anyone who is implying that this President has ambitions to blow up the world is looney even if you disagree with his policies in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere.

What was meant by this scene was that Lex's worse fear is that his "darker" side will take over and his ambitions for power will result in him having the ULTIMATE power - President of the United States.

Again, once he has that power, his fear is that his dark side will take over and destroy the world. Lex has commented to Clark on a few occasions about him fighting his demons/dark side.

What LEx would do with supereme power is Lex's greatest fear.

Clear as mud?

I do not disagree with your statement. I do however have an open mind and writers do write scenes with a certain mind set. They could of shown absolute power in a number of ways. All I'm asking is that you take a step back and look at the scene from another point of view.

Thanks

Posted by: opinion at March 24, 2005 12:41 PM

Sure, I'm sure any TV scene could be interpreted in thousands of different ways. But reading the minds of the writers is a dangerous thing to do.

In the same Smallville episode you cited, Johnathan was in a coma for 3 months and the hospital wanted to pull the plug but Martha Kent didn't want to do that. She didn't give up hope on him. Ironic the timing considering the Schiavo case? Or are the Smallville writers "conservatives" trying to make a point that you should never give up on "life"?

You see, it goes both ways. I don't think the timing had anything to do with the Schiavo case, nor do I think the Smallville writers are conservative or liberal. It is what is is. A great TV show.

There are some more direct "politicizing" in Smallvile, but the nuclear missile scene is NOT one of them. But if that's the "feeling" you got when watching Smallville, I don't fault you for your feelings or your opinion. It's just not what the writers intended you to feel during that scene in my opinion.

If anyone reads the comic books, Lex Luthor does, in fact, become President of the United States. Of course, this is from the later versions, I believe post-Superman's death. There are so many spin-off stories and all are hard to follow - Smallville was just foreshadowing what happens in the comic books, and the missiles? People - I believe it was allegorical in the sense to show Lex's evil...because let's face it - he is a Superman villain. However, there is only one person who took Superman down. One man. And that was Batman. (with the aid of Green Arrow)

Posted by: Michelle at March 24, 2005 02:24 PM

Good point on the Schiavo case. I think that was a different episode though. That one followed the bacteria one. I like that your starting to think about other instances where art reflects reality. It shows that your atleast aware of it.
