Vonage E911 news

Thought I'd share this news about Vonage and E911 using Intrado. As you know, one of the knocks against VoIP is 911 support in the event of emergencies. Of course, I have heard from a few people in the VoIP industry "knocking" against using Intrado's database. It could be due to the price-tag of using Intrado's database or it can simply be the people in the VoIP industry knocking them since don't have E911 support themselves. Or it could be that you have to register your home address into the Intrado database beforehand in order for it to work.

Who knows? But let me just share Vonage's big news involving the smallest state in America - Rhode Island...

On Thursday, Vonage will hold a joint press conference with Intrado and the state of Rhode Island 911 Administration at the National Press Club to announce a trial they have completed in RI for VoIP E 9-1-1. This is a major step forward for Vonage and the VoIP industry as a whole to get closer to an E 9-1-1 solution for VoIP calls.

In addition, Vonage will announce their participation in the National Emergency Number Association's (NENA) "Next Generation E 9-1-1" forum. This body, led by NENA will facilitate discussion on next generation technologies and services that serve as an exciting opportunity to improve our nation's 9-1-1 system. Joining the NENA process, Vonage will serve as a charter member.

Below, please find more details on the press conference, who is speaking, and what will be discussed. Let me know if you are planning on attending or joining in via Webcast or teleconference and I will add you to the RSVP list.

Vonage will be available for interviews Thursday both at the press conference and via phone.
