LastApp for iPhone = Alt-Tab

A very cool new app in Cydia called LastApp lets you quickly switch between the last two apps running on your iPhone. Think of it as Alt-Tab for the iPhone.

It only works with jailbroken iPhones (obviously). Simply go into Cydia and then choose your activation method via the Activator preference pane in Settings. You can set it do double-tapping the Home button activates, short hold of the Home button, or single press of Home button at SpringBoard.

Skype for Symbian

Skype for Symbian is now a downloadable application for Nokia phones and works over both WiFi and 3G. Over 200 million Symbian users around the world can now use this Skype app to make FREE calls to other Symbian mobile users without chewing up cellular minutes. That's a huge market!

You can download it from Skype or from the Ovi store.

Features include:

make free Skype-to-Skype calls to other Skype users anywhere in the world
save money on calls and texts with Skype's low rates
send and receive instant messages to and from individuals or groups
share pictures, videos and other files
receive calls to your online number
see when Skype contacts are online and available to call or IM
easily import names and numbers from the phone's address book

Of course, Fring already runs on Symbian, which includes Skype calling and IM.

Verizon Wireless Outage Nationwide

Verizon Wireless customers are experiencing a 3G outage nationwide. Some have been able to rectify the issue by unplugging their battery and plugging it back in, while others are still having a complete outage - both voice and data. (Verizon) Blackberry users are also offline, so no email access. Ironically, today Verizon Wireless put out a release how they've increased wireless broadband capacity on its Rochester, NY area network.

Textecution Disables Texting, Email and Web Browsing While Driving

Wireless Zone is now offering its customers a free application called Textecution which locks a phones texting capabilities when the user is behind the wheel. The application is targeted towards parents who are concerned about their teen's texting while driving habits. It leverages GPS to detect if you are traveling more than 10mph and then it disables texting, as well as email and web browsing.

Sure, but what if your son/daughter turns off GPS? Or they could sit on their phone to block the GPS signal, then quickly whip it out, text something, then stuff it back under their buttocks.

Skype to 3G Carriers - Tear down this VoIP over 3G wall! Verizon Complies

We can end my speculation now - Verizon Wireless is indeed enabling Skype to work over Verizon's 3G network. Wow! This is ginormous game-changing news. It would appear the great firewall between allowing VoIP over 3G on carrier's networks is finally cracking.

What's Wrong with Windows Phone 7?

So everyone is gushing over how sexy the new Windows Phone 7 Series is. Microsoft has done a "reboot" of their mobile operating system and gone to an entirely new operating system. Sorry Windows Mobile fans, your old apps won't work on this new phone.

Truphone Brings Wi-Fi Calling To Nexus One

At ITEXPO I learned from Truphone's PR team that they released a new Android application updated to operate on Google's new device.

Here's the news:

Hot on the heels of the release of Truphone's VoIP enabled Truphone for Android application earlier this month, Truphone, the next generation global mobile operator, today announces that it is the first company to provide Wi-Fi calling on the Nexus One device from Google.

Following collaboration with Google, Truphone is pleased to announce that from today, Truphone for Android is compatible with the Nexus One. In addition to compatibility with the Nexus One, the update (version 3.0.2), ensures compatibility with the T-Mobile Pulse, meaning that Truphone is now Wi-Fi compatible with a total of five Android devices.

Karl Good, Director of Applications for Truphone said, "Google has been very helpful in working with the Truphone team to allow us to provide our award-winning solution to the growing number of Nexus One owners. Once again it is a testament to Truphone that we are the first to be able to offer this technology to consumers."

Use of WiMAX in Smart Grid Networks

Kevin R. F. Suitor from Redline Networks gave an interesting speaking session at ITEXPO with the topic called 'Use of WiMAX in Smart Grid Networks'. One of his more interesting comments was that plug-in electric vehicles will change everything - just like the mobile phone invented by Martin Cooper changed the wireless industry. I agree - if only they can solve the battery problems, including battery fade, not enough range, slow charging cycle.

I captured the last 98s or so of his session which has some interesting tidbits.

Cell Phones Do a Body (& Mind) Good

Well, well well - it appears that cell phone radiation isn't all that bad; brain cancer be damned! You see, a recent study showed that electromagnetic radiation exposed to mice actually reversed Alzheimer's disease and improved cognitive capabilities. So you see, you are smarter the more you use your smartphone.

According to the ABC News article, "A similar (electromagnetic radiation) exposure in normal mice -- for two hours a day over seven to nine months -- improved their cognitive abilities compared with controls, Arendash and colleagues said in the January issue of the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, which is the research journal of the Alzheimer's Association."

Hey, if radiation can give Spiderman super-strength and "spider sense" that lets him sense danger, then it makes sense that low-levels of radiation can make us smarter.

Truphone Comes to Android - But no VoIP over 3G

Truphone fans will be happy to hear that the popular VoIP application now works on Android mobile handsets, though support for the new Google Nexus One is coming soon. Truphone's new Android application enables free calls to other Truphone, Skype and Google Talk users - though only over Wi-Fi and not 3G.

I don't get why Truphone only works over WiFi. AT&T for example recently announced they were allowing VoIP over 3G applications on the iPhone , including Skype. While running VoIP over AT&T's 3G data connection can have sketchy quality sometimes, it's still nice to have the option. Is Google not allowing VoIP over 3G on their Android devices or has Truphone just not enabled that feature?
