Katrina's Destruction Will Not Prevent A Recovery

September 1, 2005

The death and destruction throughout the Gulf Coast region following Hurricane Katrina make it virtually impossible at this point to imagine the recovery and rebirth of the area, including the reconstruction of New Orleans that will certainly take several years.

But at some point we should remember that we are fortunate to live in a country that is capable of such a comeback. Remember that we are a nation that:

* Spent about half a century opposing Communism until the Berlin Wall fell and the Soviet Union was consigned to the history books.

* Was victorious in World War II after simultaneously fighting and defeating two major powers on opposite sides of the world.

I have a suggestion for the President. There are two men in this country that have the integrity, intelligence, experience, and political stature to, working in conjunction, handle the reconstruction of New Orleans. One is a former Governor and President who knows about all there is to know about housing the homeless and helping the poor. The other is a former five-star general and Secretary of State who knows all there is to know about getting things done. Both are statesmen with a long record of knowing how to diplomatically work and play well with others. If Jimmy Carter could put Menachen Began and Anwar Sadat in a room and get them to sign an accord, I have no doubt he can convince Federal, State and local officials to achieve consensus for reconstruction of New Orleans. Neither man appears to have any political aspirations that have not been fulfilled. This would be a totally bipartisan and biracial effort. If President Bush wants to redeem his now sullied reputation, win respect of even democrats, and inspire the country with how successful things can work out when people of different races and ideologies work together for a common goal, he should seek to enlist Colin Powell and Jimmy Carter to get the job done. He should tell them that their country needs them now, perhaps more than ever before, in the face of this tragedy. Then he should step back and let them make him look good.
