Rodriguez the Real MVP

October 3, 2005

This space is not often devoted to the world of sports, but with the baseball playoffs getting started tomorrow, it seemed a good time to make an exception by addressing the question that baseball fans in the Northeast are asking: Who should win the Most Valuable Player award in the American League, the Yankees' Alex Rodriguez or David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox?

The Yankees secured their eighth consecutive American League East division title Saturday with an 8-4 victory over the Red Sox in Boston.

And what did Ortiz do in a game the Red Sox needed to win in order to prevent the Yankees from securing the title? He managed only one hit in four at-bats. And what did Rodriguez do in leading his team to victory? Four hits in five at-bats, including a double and a home run.

Add that to the fact that A-Rod is a much more complete player than Ortiz will ever be, and the choice is claar: A-Rod is the MVP.
