Wireless Internet Access a 'Fundamental' Right?

October 4, 2005

Maybe San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom could have used different words when he reportedly described wireless Internet access as a fundamental right of all citizens.

"This is inevitable -- Wi-Fi. It is long overdue," the mayor was quoted as saying as his city looks to establish Wi-Fi service. "It is to me a fundamental right to have access universally to information. This is a civil rights issue as much as anything else."

When I think of fundamental rights, they include such essentials as food, water and shelter along with those rights guaranteed by the Constitution, such as freedom of the press, freedom to worship, freedom to assemble and freedom to criticize our elected leaders.

Perhaps Newsom could have described Wi-Fi as "a significant step toward enhancing the quality of life in the 21st century."
