Employment Takes a Hit from Katrina

Labor Department job losses September Hurricane Katrina unemployment payrolls economists

The Labor Department has issued numbers detailing the job losses in September following Hurricane Katrina.

The nation suffered a loss of jobs last month for the first time in more than two years. Unemployment jumped to 5.1 percent with a 35,000 drop in payrolls in September. The rate reached a four-year low of 4.9 percent in August. The September job numbers represented the greatest drop since 54,000 jobs were lost in April 2003.

So where's the good news in all of this? The impact on payrolls was not as bad as had been predicted by some as economists had mentioned a job loss of at least 150,000.

By Glenn J.
Postal Service Looking for Feedback

United States Postal Service customer satisfaction survey Gallup Organization fuel economy

The United States Postal Service is looking for some help.

A customer satisfaction survey from the USPS arrived in my mailbox this week and opened with: "Dear Valued Customer: How are we doing?"

The Gallup Organization "will compile the results to help us decide where and how we can improve our service to customers," the letter said.

It offered the option of completing the 28-question survey and returning it in a postage-paid envelope, or I could provide the feedback via the Web.

Recipients are asked to rate the USPS in several categories based on experiences during the past 30 days. The questions cover such things as time spent waiting in line at the post office window, the number of visits to the post office during the past 30 days, change-of-address orders and if I operated a business from my home. I was also asked to give my opinion of the USPS' Web site.

But what I didn't see was any reference to the reported 5.4 percent increase set for January. The 28th and final question is set aside for additional comments. Here's my comment: taking a bite out of the pockets of consumers and businesses is not appreciated. With the increased cost of fuel threatening the economy, a postal increase in 2006 represents more difficulty for those who rely on the USPS.

It may be time to consider eliminating Saturday service. And it's difficult to believe that an organization as large as the USPS doesn't have a significant amount of fat that can be trimmed.

By Glenn J.

Managers and bosses up and down the East Coast should be on the lookout for a decline in productivity among the baseball fans who may be coming to work today in a sleep-deprived state.

The situation could be particularly noticeable in the New York metropolitan area.

The reason: last night's American League Division Series game between the New York Yankees and the Angels in Anaheim, Calif., got started at approximately 10 p.m. on the East Coast. Given the three hours it generally takes to play a Major League game, and simple math tells us that many fans were awake until about 1 a.m. this morning as they watched the Yankees lose on the West Coast.

The solution: plenty of coffee throughout the morning, and hoping for productivity to pick up after lunch.

By Glenn J. It also stated that "we believe that Avaya's recent product and services introductions have focused on bringing the company's core enterprise voice technology to any device at any time.

"We believe that Avaya's strategy to bring its enterprise-level voice functionality to any device at any time effectively leverages the company's strong position in communication applications such as unified messaging and contact center. More broadly, this strategy is indicative of Avaya's transformation from a legacy voice hardware-focused company into a software applications-focused company."

By Glenn J.
Rich Getting Richer, Paying Less Taxes

Internal Revenue Service rich elite effective income tax rates middle class

An Internal Revenue Service report simply verified what we already know: it's good to be rich. And it's even better to be very rich.

We learn from the IRS that the portion of income headed to the upper one-tenth of 1 percent of those who pay taxes jumped two years ago as the percentage reaching 99 percent of the country dropped.

Those at the elite level are also paying less in taxes, as their effective income tax rates dropped considerably. The top 10th of 1 percent contributed about 23.6 percent of income in taxes, down from about 27 percent in 2002. By comparison, tax rates dropped by three-tenths of a percent or less for the bottom 80 percent.

Incomes increased 2.7 percent overall in 2003 compared with 2002, according to the IRS. But one-fourth of the boost found its way to the upper 10th of 1 percent. This group is made up of 129,000 taxpayers with at least $1.3 million in income. Incomes were up by less than 2 percent, a level below the inflation rate of 2.3 percent, for the bottom 99 percent.

Perhaps the most interesting statistic coming from the IRS is the fact that the upper 10th-of-a-percent generated greater income two years ago than the lowest one-third of taxpayers.

By Glenn J.

Well, it seems there are some who didn't care for a recent contribution to this space in which I stated that the U.S. should retain control of the Internet rather than handing it over to the U.N.

"Keep the Internet under the control of the U.S., which has given the world almost all of the technological advancements that people on this planet take for granted," I wrote. "Or, turn it over to an organization that gave us the oil-for-food scandal? The choice couldn't be more clear."

I was accused by one respondent of disrespect and ignorance who stated that I should "shut up or come up with some well-based arguments instead."

Another stated that America has contributed very little to the world's technological advancement for a country of its size and economic power.

In response I offer one name: Thomas Edison.

Eliminate his contribution from the world and we're all living just as our great-great grandparents did. No, thanks.

I remain unshaken in the belief that the U.S. must retain control of the Internet and not let an organization as corrupt and inept as the U.N. take over. And when it comes to questioning American ingenuity, remember Mr. Edison and try to think of what type of world we would have without his contributions. It would in no way resemble our current reality.

By Glenn J. Kalinoski, Executive Editor, Customer Inter@ction Solutions

This space is not often devoted to the world of sports, but with the baseball playoffs getting started tomorrow, it seemed a good time to make an exception by addressing the question that baseball fans in the Northeast are asking: Who should win the Most Valuable Player award in the American League, the Yankees' Alex Rodriguez or David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox?

The Yankees secured their eighth consecutive American League East division title Saturday with an 8-4 victory over the Red Sox in Boston.

And what did Ortiz do in a game the Red Sox needed to win in order to prevent the Yankees from securing the title? He managed only one hit in four at-bats. And what did Rodriguez do in leading his team to victory? Four hits in five at-bats, including a double and a home run.

Add that to the fact that A-Rod is a much more complete player than Ortiz will ever be, and the choice is claar: A-Rod is the MVP.

By Glenn J. The number of claims had totaled 20,000 and 91,000 during the first two weeks after the storm hit.

Katrina could eliminate 400,000 positions during the last four months of 2005, according to the Congressional Budget Office. However, it has been reported that some economists have said that as many as 500,000 workers could lose their jobs due to Katrina.

By Glenn J.
A New Record of Failure

irresponsible credit new record American consumer Bankers Association cards overdue skyrocketing energy prices minimum payments delinquencies Jim Chessen home-equity car loans late fees

The irresponsible use of credit has produced a new record for the American consumer.

The American Bankers Association tells us that the seasonally adjusted percentage of credit cards overdue for 30 days or more increased during the second quarter to 4.81 percent. The amount is just above the 4.76 percent posted during the first quarter. It was also the highest since the organization started collecting the data in 1973.

Some of the reasons for the development: the increased cost of credit; skyrocketing energy prices; and a boost in minimum payments required by credit card companies.

Credit card delinquencies should remain high in future quarters, according to the association's chief economist Jim Chessen.

Making matters worse was that the association also reported that the delinquency rate on a composite of other consumer loan types, including home-equity and car loans, jumped to 2.22 percent during the quarter from 2.03 during the first quarter.

The message to the American consumer: get those payments in on time and, at all costs, avoid those punishing late fees.

By Glenn J. Kalinoski, Executive Editor, Customer Inter@ction Solutions
