Google, Gizmo...Game On

July 31, 2009

The Google Voice and Gizmo partnership bears watching. By signing up with both companies and performing a few software downloads and such, you are on your way to making free calls. It is unclear if the service is global or just for the US. Nevertheless, it is clear that the service is free.

The Broadvox VAR On-Boarding Process...

July 29, 2009

Proper on-boarding of a VAR is very important to their success as a reseller of our product offering. As stated before SIP is to new to assume that VARs understand the marketing, selling and installation of SIP Trunks. To that end, it is always a pleasure when an OEM agrees to the value of the effort and sponsors the initial session. This summer we have been invited by Panasonic, ESI and NEC to meet their dealers.

Goodbye and Hello

July 27, 2009

Today I want to thank so many members of the IP Community that assisted in raising money and visibility for Brianna Sharp. Sadly, I must inform you that she died at 6:12 Saturday morning. When we began this journey last August, we knew the odds would be long in curing her of a cancer that takes 90% of its young victims within twelve months. Studying the various forms of treatments left little hope, as there just isn't enough money to conduct the proper level of research, and these children succumb too quickly for long-term studies.

Presenting IP Communications Continued...

There are five key areas to understand when improving upon presentation skills:

·         Voice Management

·         Body Control

·         Content Delivery

Presenting the IP Message

July 22, 2009

Two things happened over the last couple of weeks; we held our quarterly sales meeting and ESI has begun the roll out of Broadvox to its dealers in support of their new SIP Interface. It's always good to have the quarterly sales meeting because it reminds me of the excellence of the people that make up the team. Since most of the team works from home offices around the country, personal interaction is limited. Therefore, these meetings become a precious time to get to know them and share information that is best transferred in person.

Stirring Things Up

July 20, 2009

It was another good weekend to relax and cook. I grilled some steaks and served those with homemade curly fries and grilled squash and zucchini. Sunday, we had one of my favorite dishes, a bucket of clams and mussels. They are steamed in a rich broth that becomes almost a soup.

Service Providers and Business VoIP Security

July 17, 2009

The most important thing a service provider can do to reduce the risk of unauthorized access is to offer VoIP with SIP. Through the use of SIP, protection against Cyber attacks can be accomplished with increasing latency in the network. As stated before, these types of attacks will only increase as the use of VoIP expands in the market place. With SIP, the service provider can better authenticate users, isolate traffic and deploy stronger/safer network elements.

VoIP Security Begins at Home

July 15, 2009

The first part of this discussion was on simple things an IT Department should be doing to protect its IT infrastructure period. Today we will focus more on VoIP security actions a business should per perform. The first is to understand these are multiple levels of security required: the infrastructure, call management, endpoints and applications. For each level, tools already exist to manage and secure the IP communications whether it is data, voice or both.

Tarragon Chicken and There It's gone Security

July 13, 2009

Last week one evening after work, I noted that my herb garden was over flowing with tarragon. The last few years we have treated it like rosemary and left it in for the winter. Tarragon has proven to be quite hardy. With so much tarragon, I decided to make a Tarragon Chicken with Wild Mushroom Sauce entrée.

Centrex, Is Still Alive?

July 10, 2009

A few months ago, we were asked to review a request for proposal where the prospect wanted to replace their Centrex lines with VoIP/SIP Trunking. I didn't think much of it until I realized that none of our SIP Trunking call center team knew what Centrex was. We had discussed "hosted" solutions, as that is part of Broadvox's legacy, and one may even consider it a competitive offering to our SIP Trunking products. However, the term, Centrex, had never been used and they did not know who supplied Centrex services.

Mirepoix, Classic...Next Generation, Priceless

July 8, 2009

The Fourth of July is a grilling weekend and mine was no exception. I fixed smoked chicken breasts, St. Louis Style barbeque ribs, bacon wrapped scallops and glazed shrimp. It was a feast for the eyes and soul. Thus far I have not shared any of the grilling recipes because, items such as the chicken and ribs begin by being marinated for 24 hours, the chicken in a brine of salt and lemon juice, the ribs rubbed with barbeque seasonings.

Wi-Fi, Mi-FI and Broadband Access

Before we continue our discussion of Personal Area Networks (PAN), I should note that Julius Genachowski was confirmed as the Chairman of the FCC last week. This wasn't a surprise but it was anxiously awaited. He will have a lot to do in a very short time.
