Pulled Plug and Pork

January 31, 2011

The weekend was a short one with me having to travel on Sunday. I considered not having a recipe this morning but that would have been wrong. Friday night we had Chinese takeout. Surprise!

Internet On, Internet Off

January 28, 2011

Most of my blogs avoid politics because I want the focus to be on learning about IP communications and gaining a selling advantage. Today is a little different in that I am very much opposed to legislation sponsored by two usually milquetoast politicians, Senators Joe Lieberman (I-Connecticut) and Susan Collins (R-Maine). The Lieberman-Collins bill, “Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act” would allow the Department of Homeland Security to establish and maintain a list of servers, systems or assets that constitute critical infrastructure of the Internet. The government is enabled to make the designation without congressional or judicial review.

Zero, Six, 6940

January 26, 2011

It seems that even when IP communications gets a mentioned in the State of the Union address, it is only as a prop for some other thing. The 2011 State of the Union address had 6940 words, 6 mentions of the Internet and no mention of telecom, telecommunications or related words. As bad as this looks, it is still better than last year where out of 7291 words, there was no mention of any of the above.

President Obama failure to telecommunications last night continues to disturb me.

Going Dutch

January 24, 2011

Sushi Friday night and French to celebrate our anniversary on Saturday left few options for an original recipe this weekend. Therefore, one of two dishes made on Sunday would have to succeed. The leading option was a meaty pasta entrée I make every winter. It is Italian gravy with chucky beef and large diced vegetables served over rigatoni pasta.

Practicing Safe SIP

January 21, 2011

From time to time I do multi-part blogs to describe more complicated issues. Last month the Broadvox marketing team and I decided to consolidate a few of the blogs into an article which was published in Telecom Reseller. That article got more reads than anything else I have written. I would like to say that the subject matter was the reason, however I think it was more the title “Practicing Safe SIP”.

Welcome to Telecom Prairie

January 19, 2011

In 1984 I was part of a small group of people that opened the Ericsson US offices in Richardson, Texas. At that time no one knew how many telecom related firms would eventually locate themselves in what became Telecom Prairie and ultimately Telecom Corridor. Besides Ericsson some of the early entrants were Intecom, MCI, Digital Switch Corporation, and Northern Telecom. Over time some of these companies merged with others and the area saw the entry of Alcatel, WorldCom, Huawei, Nokia and Fujitsu.

A Bold and Rich Choice

January 17, 2011

This was another weekend where I knew the recipe of the week on Friday. We had some finger foods on both Saturday and Sunday for watching the football games. Although, my wife and I enjoyed every bite of Sunday’s finger food, crispy sweetbreads and garlic fries, it would not be typical for most football fans. Consequently, I am presenting a dish I made last week as the recipe of the week.

ReVeal

January 10, 2011

I didn’t cook this weekend until Sunday. And deciding what was the recipe of the week was a bit difficult as a result. I made Osso Buco with roasted potatoes, cabbage and cheesy rolls. Each was delicious.

The Value of the VAR

January 7, 2011

It is not unusual for a VAR to ask our channel managers how to improve their sales of SIP. However, it is the wrong the question. The VAR should never lead with SIP. The Broadvox VAR Partner Program was established because VARs are critical to communicating the benefits and hurdles in transitioning from a TDM to VoIP/SIP Trunking infrastructure.

The FCC Capitulates on Network Neutrality

January 5, 2011

As expected the FCC issued new rules to secure an open internet. They are summarized as follows:

1.       Internet service providers (ISPs) must provide services in a transparent manner by disclosing their network management practices and performance characteristics.

Where's the Beef?

January 3, 2011

Much to my wife’s disappointment, I decided to check out a few local restaurants to see if any could peak my interests during the holidays. We ate out four consecutive days. We did find one restaurant that we will return to again. Flavors, an Indian restaurant, was surprisingly good with an interesting buffet.
