It's Not That Time of Year

I tend to look back on my weekends and think I didn’t cook very much. As usual though, once I take stock of each day, I begin to realize that I was in the kitchen more than I thought. Saturday, I made breakfast sandwiches (egg, cheese, bacon on whole wheat). It is a simple recipe and I will share it with you in a future blog. I got the basic idea from the Huron Deli, a small diner dive across the street from the Broadvox office in Cleveland.  It adds variety to our weekend breakfasts. Sunday, I fixed grilled teriyaki marinated New York strip steak, fried shrimp, sautéed scallops and hamburger soup. We decided to do take-out Chinese food on Sunday but I am always less than impressed by the size of the shrimp or the quality of the beef. So, I ordered a vegetable dish to which I could add the grilled and thinly sliced beef and a fish dish that would benefit from split jumbo shrimp and perfectly browned scallops.  It was excellent and a definite improvement even though it’s not exactly take-out. Okay, it was 103o outside on Sunday and I decided to make soup. The soup serves two purposes, use up an unfinished monster OMG Burger from the Whiskey Cake, and provide me with lunch for a couple of days. This soup is heavy on vegetables and light on meat. You can always add more meat if you like it the other way around. I also added three chopped jalapenos for a little kick but I leave that up to you as well. This soup is intended to assist in cleaning out the refrigerator so substitute corn, peas, lima beans or whatever is on hand. This is a great soup and the cook time is short. Hamburger and Vegetable Soup is the recipe of the week. Enjoy!

Do They Make a Couple?

Ericsson has announced its intention to purchase Telcordia for $1.15 billion. The price is seems to be very favorable but will they come together well as a company? Oddly enough, I worked for both companies and over the years have worked in partnership with them as well. Therefore, I believe I am somewhat qualified in saying I have higher hopes of this working than any other previous situation for Telcordia. Both companies benefit from the transaction. Telcordia gains greater access to markets outside the US/North America and Ericsson improves its position as a vendor to the major LECs. Additionally, it gets business and operations support systems that support multi-vendor network environments supporting its expansion into managed network services. Both companies have a strong engineering culture which should mesh well together.

Telcordia needs an owner with a long term communications vision and strong balance sheet. Ericsson can provide each. How Ericsson leverages Telcordia’s strengths in conjunction with its mobility offerings will be telling. We will find out in 2012.
