$100 Billion and Counting

November 30, 2011

Facebook is intending to go public in 2012 and the target valuation is a staggering $100 billion. Whether or not the figure is accurate will be determined over time but there are several things both positive and negative to note. First, Facebook has over 700 million members. That is a very large audience for advertising and information distribution.

Sweet News

November 28, 2011

Obviously, given that it was Thanksgiving weekend, I did a fair amount of cooking, however, not on Thanksgiving Day. Since Gay and I were dining alone we agreed that fixing an enormous meal was just not worth it. Instead I fried some chicken and made a light salad. Okay, it wasn’t that simple. I fried chicken, Cornish game hen and smoked chicken.

Cranberries, Ahead of the Day

November 21, 2011

After a quiet weekend of with little cooking last week, this one was cooking at a torrid pace. Friday, we enjoyed London broil marinated with olive oil and garlic. Saturday was the day of the smoker. I cured and lightly smoked three salmon filets, 21 pounds of bacon, two turkeys, one chicken, one whole ham, cheese, sausages and one whole salmon.

Broadband Selection Criteria

November 18, 2011

Since I did a series covering the selection criteria for determining your broadband needs and provider, I know some of you missed a blog or two and don’t have the entire list. The seven questions follow. To get the answers, you will need to read the blogs from this week and last week.
  1. How many endpoints will need to be supported?
  2. What type of traffic will the broadband connection support?
  3. How many IP Addresses are required?
  4. What is the budget for broadband?

Broadband is Around the Corner

November 16, 2011

The final two elements to consider in making your decision are usually the least well thought-out or investigated.
  1. What is the Service Level Agreement or SLA?

Most broadband providers merely submit an agreement to the purchaser expecting no changes and for the fine print to go unread. Most buyers do not disappoint.

Clams, Clams and More Clams

November 14, 2011

Cooking this weekend took a back seat to celebrating. I did not cook Friday or Saturday. However, do not despair as I developed two exciting new recipes on Sunday. The first was clam chowder using razor clams given to me by one my co-workers.

We interrupt this Count

November 11, 2011

Yesterday, the US Senate defeated an attempt to block the pending Net Neutrality rules. The bill was defeated by a 52-46 vote. This was an important vote since a similar bill to block the implementation of the rules was passed in the House with 241-178 vote. It is difficult to understand if the votes are for principle or to support certain lobbying telecom concerns as the net neutrality proposal would prevent carriers from interrupting or modifying the flow of Internet traffic.

Broadband Selection Criteria 2 and 3

November 9, 2011

As Broadvox has grown as an ITSP and hosted service provider, exclaiming the value of improved QoS is becoming more and more important. Furthermore, with the continued ambiguity surrounding real net neutrality rules, IP communications continue to be at risk when using a third party for connectivity, in particular certain cable companies. To that end, it is incumbent upon me to provide you with additional justification to convince your prospects to purchase broadband from the carrier providing VoIP/SIP Trunking and hosted Unified Communications services. Numbers 2 and 3 follow:

2)  What type of traffic will the broadband connection support?

It is too easy to merely ask the question of whether the business broadband is supporting data and/or voice.

Aioli and Broadband, Hundreds of Options

November 7, 2011

What a weekend! Friday, I deep fried a seasoned turkey breast and made a salad for Gay and a sandwich for me. Deep fried turkey is very different from fried chicken. It doesn’t use flour or batter and the end result is very juicy and flavorful.

The Risk of BYOB

November 4, 2011

The Risk of BYOB

Bring Your Own Broadband (BYOB) is not nearly as bad as most carriers claim. Broadvox is one of the few carriers that will support a SIP Trunk providing VoIP service utilizing BYOB. We do this primarily because businesses can become trapped in long term agreements with a carrier and would face high termination fees if they attempted to cancel prior to the end of the contract term.

Mobility and Unified Communications

There has been a growing pool of people discussing the end of the desk phone. Well I am not one of them. The desk phone continues to have its benefits. It is inexpensive, easy to install and manage, has a long life cycle and is simple to use.
