Dennis Goes To The Hoosegow!

September 19, 2005

Before today's sentencing of up to 25 years in prison for Tyco execs Dennis Kozlowski and Mark Swartz, Dennis Kozlowski's's lawyer pleaded for leniency for his client by pointing out that even though Kozlowski and Swartz fleeced the company blind, it hadn't collapsed like Enron.

"Tyco is not Enron,” Thomas Curran, a former New York City prosecutor who is now a defense lawyer, said. “Tyco is a real company with a real business plan that still employs thousands of people. ...

Fiorina Teams With Steve Case

September 9, 2005

Interesting. Former HP head Carly Fiorina announced yesterday that she would join the board of Revolution Health, an investment vehicle that America Online Inc. founder Steve Case launched in April.

According to the Washington Post, this is notable because the board consists largely of executives who were prominently booted out of their former positions.

"Among [the board members] are Stephen F. Wiggins, once chief executive of Oxford Health Plans Inc., who was pushed out in 1998; and Franklin D. Raines, former chairman and chief executive of housing finance company Fannie Mae, who stepped down last December after the Securities and Exchange Commission ordered the company to restate about $10.8 billion in previously reported earnings.

Poky Mainstream News

August 29, 2005

As I search for news about the fate of architectural New Orleans (Yes, I'm concerned for the city's citizens, but I'm also concerned about irreparable damage to a city I love very much), I've realized how very slow mainstream news organizations are. There are still "Top Stories" on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC and others that are 10 to 12 hours old.

We update news and articles on TMCnet far faster than the mainstream organizations do!

So, in case you've been searching for THIS piece of news, I'll share something I found in the Dallas Morning News

Happy Birthday, Flying Toasters

August 26, 2005

Do you remember the introduction of the "Flying Toasters" screensaver? I do. Actually, the whole selection of After Dark screensavers were the delight of late-80s computer users everywhere (I actually liked the "fish tank" saver best.) Before that, computers were soulless dust collectors to most of us: necessary but about as exciting as a stapler. There was really no such thing as "my" computer; in an office situation, they were all the same, except for a few personalized saved documents.

New "Ebay" Scam

August 25, 2005

I fell for this one long enough to double-check. It takes a lot for me to even temporarily fall for a scam:

I received an e-mail telling me that I had "won" an auction. It looked so much like the usual "win" e-mail that eBay sends that I momentarily panicked.

Amazon: Pick up our Shorts

August 19, 2005

Online retailer Amazon.com today launched a digital “Shorts” offering for its customers, a sort of iTunes for book worms. Customers can read samples and shorts from some renowned authors, as well as from works of new authors, for 49 cents each.

(Why oh why does one song purchased from iTunes usually cost 99 cents and an entire work of {albeit-short} literature costs a mere 49 cents? I’m pleased that a literary work is cheaper than a song, but I’m pari passu agitated at the implications, i.e., literature is a “harder sell” than a single song.)

The exclusive short-form literature featured in Amazon Shorts will not appear in any printed editions and will only be delivered digitally.
