It’s a good thing the Mayans got it wrong and the world didn’t end on Dec. 21st 2012, because 2013 introduced game-changing telecom trends with focus on network automation, cloud computing, small cells and big data. 

Last year the wireless industry saw some pretty mind-blowing forecasts — from the SDN, NFV and network virtualization market growing to $4 billion in 2014 to Infonetics Research projecting the small cell market to hit $2.7 billion by 2017. In the third quarter alone, there were over 250 million global smartphone shipments, up 45 percent from a year ago.

Generation of $20 Billion Seen By Mobile Operators from the Maturity of Internet Voice as "Carrier OTT"

There is a new report out today from Juniper Research. The report is entitled “Future Voice Strategies: mVoIP, Carrier OTT and Mobile Video Calling 2014-2018.” This report finds that by the year 2018 mobile network operators will generate revenues that could go as high as $20 billion.

This expected revenue will come through Internet based voice, or “carrier OTT” (Over The Top) strategies. We can expect to see this Internet voice revenue coming from new service propositions and bundles.
