Sun To See SeeBeyond As Its Own

June 29, 2005

Network computer maker Sun Microsystems yesterday announced it would buy business-integration software provider SeeBeyond Technology Corp. — a company whose name sounds an awful lot like a song made famous by a 1950s-Bronx-born teen idol — in an attempt to strengthen its position in the business integration market and “monetize the market opportunity in a big-time way,” according to Sun Chairman and Chief Executive Scott McNealy.

The deal is expected to help Sun further profit from its 10-year-old Java programming language, which allows developers to build programs that can run on multiple computers regardless of operating system and microprocessor. SeeBeyond uses Java-based technology in software that assists businesses in tying or “stitching” together multiple applications and different computer systems that have been individually developed and don't communicate well with each other.

This deal brings computer maker Sun Microsystems its second major acquisition in less than a month, the previous announcement being that of Sun’s intentions to buy Storage Technology Corp., a maker of tape drives and backup software to store data, for $4.1 billion.

Sun said it expects to complete the transaction in the next four to five months. The transaction will see SeeBeyond being purchased for $387 million cash. (Imagine the number of Bobby Darin albums that can be bought with that much cash...)
