OCS-Office Communications Server Exposed – SIP Mediation Server
October 25, 2007
What sounds more like having an “intervention” or “meditation,” Microsoft refers to their “media” server as a mediation server. The Mediation Server communicates with the IP-Internet Protocol to PSTN-Public Switched Telephone Network TDM-Time Division Multiplexed gateway and the Director to provide connections from the PSTN network into the OCS-Office Communications Server 2007. In addition, the Mediation Server provides:
• Translating SIP over TCP (on the gateway side) to SIP over MTLS-Mutual Transport Layer Service (on the Enterprise Voice side)
• Encrypting and decrypting SRTP (Secure Real-time Transport Protocol) on the OCS side
• Translating media (conversations) streams between OCS and the media gateway
• Connecting clients that are outside the network to internal ICE (Interactive Connectivity Establishment) (explained later in this presentation) components to enable media traversal of NAT and firewalls
• Provide as an intermediary for call flows that a gateway does not support, such as calls from remote workers on an Enterprise Voice client (referred to as PBX devices).
Shown here is one of the many cool applications coming with SIP applications:
On demand business meetings, training, broadcast announcements, call-to-meeting notifications, even reverse 911 are enhanced with SIP trunking. "Event" notification can also be enhanced with SIP Trunking for fire-public safety or business applications such as sporting-concert events, restaurant-airline seat availability or stock price monitors.
If you want to know more about OCS, this and more than 100 other concepts are explained in a new course called SIP Essentials – OCS Special Edition available online or in a classroom. There is also a separate version for channel partners wanting to explore offering OCS to their customers. For more go to: http://www.techtionary.com/nacse/istudies-ocs.htm
