FirstNet - Step 1

Getting anything accomplished, particularly along the lines of something the size of FirstNet, requires a massive coordination of efforts and awareness, but that's exactly what seems to be the issue at the moment. As significant as FirstNet is to the United States, and considering the dire urgency of its creation, there doesn't seem to be any alignment of the goals and objectives along with the messaging for the masses. To be clear, it is not very clear. Full Story

FirstNet - The $7B Startup Funded by the United States Congress

That's the official statement. If the "safety" overtones are removed it reads completely differently. FirstNet "will help" safety in the U.S., but after a close read of the Act, it's clear that FirstNet is not limited to only investing in creating, operating and serving safety networks. That is an important distinction, borderline omission, in the headline story. Full Story

Dark Fiber and the Data Center

Many different types of designs are being contemplated. Container campuses, shell and core buildings with containers within, containers standalone, etc and all of the above. FCC National Broadband Plan - Washington DC Workshop

On August 12, 2009 I spoke on a broadband panel at the FCC in Washington DC. It was quite an experience. In all of my years of public speaking I have never been given a 3 minute time limit for my introduction. There is a lot to say about dark fiber, carrier hotels, data centers, Ethernet, wavelengths, wireless broadband, voice peering, etc. Thankfully the FCC were gracious hosts and the panel went for 2 hours, so everyone got to make their points. A National Broadband Plan for Our Future - Reply Comments

The "solution" to the problem of rural broadband is not so easy when looking out from within the rural areas themselves. If they are viewed instead as part of a larger "network of rural islands" and how they are located between major served areas of broadband access the true way forward can be observed. Full Story

Allied Fiber's National Broadband Plan Comments

Although this is overly Internet related, it is so due to the overwhelming popularity of the Internet and its seemingly synonomus relationship with the term and concept of broadband. Too much is made of the Internet and not enough of physical access to it for many to realize that the root issues are in the ducts and dark fiber. Full Story
