Digital Swarms for Good - Jonathan's Card

In the past I have talked about the "Gift Economy" concept (a term most recently coined by author Howard Rheingold) being critical to successfully unlocking the potential of mobility in the future. (Gift Economies are defined by users investing effort/taking action for the benefit of the greater good versus expecting something in return as is the case in a transaction economy) There are plenty of recent examples around us like Wikipedia, Participatory sensing networks like CitySense, or even the recent Arab Spring with regime changes coordinated via SMS/social messaging. I now have an example right in front of me thanks to one of my colleagues at Mobiquity, Jonathan Stark, our VP of Mobile Architecture (and author of several leading books on iOS and Android Development). Mobile Communities and Emerging Swarms

Everyday we read about mobile social networking becoming more prevalent. With the iPhones breakthrough in the mobile web browsing experience and overall UI (and others have followed suit), the limitations of using new types of content (maps, pictures, clips, songs) into social networking posts and communications via mobiles has been dramatically reduced. Smart Dust and Digital Swarms

The recent article in the New York Times, (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/31/business/31unboxed.html) , "Smart Dust are We There yet?" talks about the progress in distributed wireless sensors which I have talked about in previous blogs. While we continue along the Moore's Law track towards smaller more capable nano-sensors, the more interesting part of the story is the surge in Participitory sensing where humans and their phones are the sensors.
