How Much Is Too Much In Pre-Order Bonuses?

Watching the “Saints Row” series has been an exciting ride. From the straightforward action of the first one, to the comically-infused styling of the second, to the over-the-top madness of the third one, it's tough to tell just what's going on with this series. If anyone ever thought that the fourth one would go back to the straightforward, well, that idea is pretty much dead with “Saints Row IV”'s release of the Super Dangerous Wad Wad edition. There's only one of them ever to be released. And wait until you hear what's in this preorder pack.

There's a reason it's called the “Million Dollar Pack,” but the Super Dangerous Wad Wad edition is going to offer an almost nightmarish amount of premiums. Included in the Super Dangerous Wad Wad edition is, of course, the “Saints Row IV: Commander in Chief” edition of the game, but also a ton of other experiences and premiums thrown in. Included in the list is a personal shopper and a capsule wardrobe, along with a full-sized replica of the Dubstep Gun from the game, along with an unnamed quantity of plastic surgery, a Lamborghini Gallardo, a Toyota Prius with a year's insurance and a year's membership in the E25 Super Car Club.

It gets better. There are also a huge array of experiences thrown in for extra value. There's a spy training day, a hostage rescue experience, seven nights at the Top Royal Suite at the Burj-al-Arab in Dubai, a week's stay for two at the Jefferson Hotel in Washington D.C., first-class flights to both locations, and just to top it off, a Virgin Galactic space flight. They will take you off the planet as part of this pre-order package.

The thing about this is that there's only one of them out there, and as the name implies, the price tag is one million dollars. Someone willing to drop the full million will get all this stuff, and all these experiences to boot. Normally, a pre-order special might include some unusual content, or some collectible bonuses like statuettes and such. But this...this goes so far as to be downright preposterous. There's only one of them, and it's so ridiculously overpriced that virtually no one would even want it in the first place. So where's the value here?

Of course, this is probably a publicity stunt, and a pretty big one, too. After all, who's not going to talk about what is likely the most expensive pre-order giveaway package ever released? We're doing it right now. So that's a massive amount of publicity for the company. It's not as though this is a bad value, either; a million bucks for all that stuff and all those experiences? Sure, that's reasonable. The package makes sense for its sheer outlandishness, because what's in here is just as outlandish as the price tag.

A little more than is practical for most anyone, but this also has some value in that it's going to catch some attention at the high-roller level. If anyone actually buys this, it may be the solution that triple-A studios have been needing for some time. After all, selling 50 $1,000 game packs is the same thing, essentially, as selling one $50,000 package, so if some deep-pocketed gamers can get in on some high-priced action, well, more power to them.
