Fallout 4's First Patch Arrives

Good news for Fallout 4 fans who are still enjoying the game as much as I am; the first patch has emerged, and it won't even be particularly demanding on the download front. So far, said patch weighs in at 505 megabytes, a reasonably hefty half-gig that will bring a slate of benefits along for the ride. When I downloaded it it came in at 464 megabytes on Xbox One, so sizes may vary.

The patch in question offers several fixes; anyone who's been getting stuck in terminals will welcome this one, as well as anyone who had troubles jumping in water, or playing the "When Freedom Calls" quest. Other "general memory and stability improvements" are on hand, giving players just a little smoother experience than without.

The patch first arrived on PC, and then migrated to PlayStation 4, with the Xbox One version following. That's a bit unusual, but the patches are so close together that it's hard for anyone involved to really object.

I recently switched characters to my pistol / melee combo, a psychopath who not only demanded revenge for her kidnapped baby Shaun but also plans to back the Railroad, a fact that will no doubt freak out the Brotherhood of Steel, who has not only already made her a Knight but also gave her a suit of power armor. Mine now, suckers! That's a step up from my machinist / automatic enthusiast who was set to back the Brotherhood--even got Liberty Prime back up and running--until he discovered he was accidentally supporting the Minutemen just a bit too hard. Whoops!

While this isn't exactly a huge patch, it's good news for those gamers who are eager to see this game keep up and running. With the first mods probably appearing for consoles in a matter of weeks, this could be the game that keeps us all very, very busy for some time to come. I'm personally shocked to see how much of my time it's still taking up, even after a month of frequent play. There's a lot to like in this game, and though it isn't always quite what I'd like--I'm tired of getting out of power armor to cook or build weapons or even access some terminals, and frankly, that main story end sequence was godawful--it's still an impressive slice of gaming that I wish more developers would emulate. Part massive treasure hunt, part exquisitely violent shooter, part impressive alternate history epic, Fallout 4 has been an unqualified joy. This patch should only make it better.
