It wasn't so long ago I was wondering where the indie games were for Xbox One, and as though Microsoft was listening, a cavalcade of indies are set to hit throughout May. The focus of May will be a month-long event known as ID@Xbox Game Fest, which will feature the produce of that great independent game creating program over the course of a month.
Starting tomorrow, and going through May 9, the program will focus on perhaps the purest of indie titles, titles like "The Park," "Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime," and "Beyond Eyes." That's just the start, of course, as the next week will feature the various free-to-play games in the Xbox One arsenal like "Smite" and "Warframe," with a side likely devoted to the various currencies involved. The next week will put the spotlight on the handful of titles in the Xbox Preview Program, like "The Long Dark" and "The Solus Project." The last week will be for the "best" for the program, including things like "Rocket League" and "Rogue Legacy". A full list of games will be on hand the farther along we go.
This is good news, of course, for anyone who was looking forward to more indie fare on Xbox One; there are few better ways than outright success to try and drive a push for indies, so if the indie games can push some volume while being featured, it gives Microsoft incentive to bring more on board. I still fondly remember the Xbox 360 indie fare; while it wasn't always great, it was often unusual, and such games were certainly worth a look at. Something like this should go a long way toward drawing interest, drawing players, and ultimately drawing developers in to take a run at this new breed of games.
One event may not be enough to drive a new indie renaissance, but it's a start. The idea of a flood of games, many unpleasant but some truly special, is a welcome one, and getting back into a pile of indie developments should make for fun times ahead.
