As the Saying goes a $ Billion here, a $ billion there sooner or later we are talking real money.

IDC's latest report does a great job talking about the money side of the equation in talking about the business distinctions are being made, imho, are more business oriented than technology driven.

Akamai, KIT Digital, Brightcove and Synacor are all described as being leaders in "their" field so the term becomes the describer of the leader.

In case the rock you have been hiding under is not Silicon, the earnings for Dell and HP were dismal.  Reading the Investor's daily article about the latest IDC report on PC shipments shows that we have other issues as well.

First of all, the ultrabook story is not getting the job done yet.  While the move makes the PC more mac like in batter life the environment is still classic PC.

Apple Wins: Can The Game Change

August 25, 2012 5:46 AM

It was not even close.

The jury said yes to almost every single infringement Apple could think of short of the claim of making a tablet rectangular was Steve’s idea.  From Apple’s perspective it could not have a better launching pad for the iPhone5 as Samsung will not be able to ship anything and the rest of the Android community will be leery of being targeted if they launch a marketing campaign.

Here is an interesting  point to make. The battle with Apple is over the look and feel of android on Samsung. As I stated earlier Apple has a home-field advantage and it seems likely that the jury is going to rule in Apple's favor.

Well personally I do not like this potential outcome and have long had my issues with Apple it probably is going to double its market share in the near-term as the ruling will impact the sales of Apple's iPhone5.

According to the NY Times Intellectual Ventures has a new spin off that Bill Gates has participated in called Kymeta.

The 12M seems to be headed toward getting production of its mTenna product lines which maybe coming at a time when the market needs for M2M will match will to the use of KA band Satellite solutions.

As we have reported ATT has announced that by 2017 it will stop supporting 2G deployments and the personal navigation device business is in need of an answer.  4G is probably going to have a lot of issues with battery and specific spectrum radios requirements.

Let's Get Sirius about John Malone

August 20, 2012 8:48 AM

Sirius is about to be under the control of Liberty Media according to the NY Times.

While Sirius had been against the acquistion it seems clear now that the  air has been cleared for the air to be used ;<).

What's interesting is the possibilities of this addition.  As you may recall Netflix owes alot of its success to the reading of the licensing from Starz (which also is a Liberty Media company).

So if you want to be excited by Facebook they are going to take a page of GoogleAds and make a Facebook network of ads outside of their site.

So now not only will I feel violated by their ability to be my security login with other sites, but I will be paranoid about the ads that pop up while i am on other sites.

This stock is going to launch and I am going to having something more to kvetch about to a world in love with the experience.

Derrick Harris of Gigaom touches the subject very handily, but at the end of the day, I feel we are off topic.

The Yahooligans at the Gate

May 14, 2012 5:51 PM

Well,  so much for Scott Thompson, reign at Yahoo!.  He over saw the stock rising and announced layoffs.  So as recent CEO's go his vision was perfect.  In fact he ended up getting himself and five members of the board layed off as well.

I have a rough time considering myself press or an analyst.  On the Press side I have been trained to always consider a press release as a strategy and not news.  On the analyst side, my perfectionism comes in and I would want more opinions before I share mine.

I find that particularly true when people become very linear, like the way that our friends in the news have picked up on people abandoning Android for development.

China Mobile in Flux

March 22, 2012 11:37 PM
The worlds largest Mobile Operator seems to be going through a major purge, with police investigations and executive resignations.  I am not sure what to make of it.

I find China Mobile a major wild card in the world market since they are committed to TD LTE and have been assisting other players around the world to follow them.

I am not sure if this a pull back on that policy or an internal issue.  The new chairman Xi Guohua is a loyal party member and this could be more about the local structure than the Internationalizing of China standards.

I have had discussions with brillant financial friends who have discounted my thoughts about the impact of chinese standards on the rest of us.  However the reality is that Huawei is delivering solutons cheaper to the current carriers and China Mobile is delivering services in mass to the point where they are a market.  Continue Reading...

OMGPOP Gets Some Zynga

March 22, 2012 11:21 PM
Here is an interesting news.  Zynga bought OMGPOP for its latest game according to the NY Times.  The issue for Zynga is that its not having as much success as it has had in Social networks.  That maybe because their model requires a commitment to gaming that is hard to sustain.

I played Cityville to the point where my town was a drain on time.  Continue Reading...
